Phil's parents and friends are mad at him. But all Phil wants to do is relax, have a good time and get high...everyday. His best friend dies, his other friends turn their backs on him and then he risks going to jail just to pay for his weed. Phil is far from a productive pot head but this short pod sheds some light on his situation.

  • This was a good pod. Phil is lucky to have people that are real with him. Some just have to hit rock bottom before they can truly pick themselves up.

  • This version rocks. I hope it gets on tv.

  • Nice version this time, great editing. Hope it gets on TV. Although as someone who believes in the legalization of marijuana I do not like the blame that gets placed on marijuana in this pod, but this was probably the best version yet. There are all sides of this issue, if marijuana was this addictive to Phil then he has other more serious problems in his life than his weed smoking habit.

  • I still think it's entirely too long, but loved, the loved the editing. It kept me engaged and I guess that's ll that matters. I have to tell you though, Phil is not a very likable subject. Even when he's talking about his feelings, I never feel for him. He just comes off as this big do nothing a-hole whose sole mission is to get high and cry. Great piece none-the-less. Hope to see it on the tube.

  • THIS IS A DYSFUNCTIONAL BUNCH OF PEOPLE WHO IF THEY CARED SO MUCH THEY MIGHT NOT BE EXPLOITING PHIL OR MARIJUANA, THEY WOULD TAKE PHIL TO A CRISIS COUNCLER , THIS IS LIKE A BUSH AD , WHAT ABOUT THE BOOZE IN THE VIDEO, NOT MENTIONED, PHILS MENTORS NOT PICTURED OR WHERE THEY?PROHIBITION IS A JOKE!THIS IS A SAD DEPICTION OF SOMEONES LIFE CRASHING AND YOU THINK THAT THIS HAS TO DO WITH MARIJUANA!BIASED AND MANIPULATIVE!!!!

  • All I can say is that you will know them by their fruits.

The fruits of this activity is apathy. This guy is floundering in a sea of confusion caused by immersion in drug culture.

I am a medical mary jane user and I am extremely productive. It has not impaired my ability to create, think, and be a caring human being. I agree with the comment that there are deeper underlying psychological problems here than marijuana.

  • It almost works as a mega-pod, but it could be shorter. The impact and possible end results of his highly dysfunctional life really kick in around the 5 minute mark. The gun scene at the start seems like it belongs as a finale to show where this all could end. The score doesn't match his family and friends feuding scenes. He's self-absorbed and doesn't deserve sympathetic strings. Don't let too much audio/video effects become the star. It takes away from the focus of the entire piece.
I think that you're one more round of editing away from an excellent pod.
    Stay with it.

  • Phil needs better friends and a family that will fight for him no matter how hard it is. I feel like everyone is giving up on him a bit, and laughing about it to make them feel like it's ok.

  • I'm commenting out of courtesy from one producer to another. If not asked, I would have never come back to see the continuation of Phil.

Technically: In my opinion, you are a very good producer and can add a lot of value to current.
The editing was nice, and the story was lead well.

Characteristically: Phil is a bit hard to watch. He is his own worst enemy. Underneath it all, it seems like his issues (violence, self-esteem, lack of education or employment, drug abuse, theft, need I go on...) stems from far more than smoking pot. Which, is one reason I don't personally like this pod, because there's an angle that suggests, by Phil, that weed is the cause of his destruction.

Everyone, his parents, his brother, and even his friends are trying to tell him he's self destructing. What I am concerned about is in the future seeing Phil in an even worse, more hostile situation, if he doesn't change his MENTALITY around. His violent nature is a SERIOUS problem.

His best friend already died, the question is: When will Phil wake up? When will he see that he can either be his own best friend and do something EVERYDAY to turn his life around? or Will he continue to be his own worst enemy and continue as a really scary dude?

God Bless you Phil! Prayer works!

  • I like the cop in the first one... hahah! but i am going to go with the 3rd version is the best. Way to go David. Its crazy to believe that when everyone is telling Phil how much its wrong, he still does it. And its weird that he doesnt realize that he is ruining his life. Or at least he doesn't want to admit it. Hopefully he will soon. Keep the movies coming David, I'll support you the whole way.

  • it's his parents fault. doesn't look like they are active people- in any regard. Do his other brothers have jobs? It looks like a safe place to be lazy. They are allowing him to continue with his addiction and the thievery, and the pettiness. 'Get a life,' i say. There are bigger fish to fry.

  • how is it his parents fault!? his parents are trying to get him to go to rehab... its Phil's fault for not going...

  • theres a great deal of spin on the story...
  • Stickinjersey, to look at this and say that it is some liberal media that is trying to prohibit marijuana use is bull. It doesn't matter the substance, the point that is being made is that anything in excess isn't good. We'd be watching the same story if Phil was a raging alcoholic.

I thought that this was a great clip. It shows that addictions can control your life. I could see this on TV.

  • This probably gets a bad rap from some people who see this as an anti pot smoking piece, but i think the main point is that some people have seriously addictive personalities, and without help they'll throw away their lives for a vice.

I know someone a lot like Phil, this was a good piece it hit close to home for me.

  • Hi CrazyDave,
I'm going to give you some feedback as you requested, as I watch your pod. First, I like the way it starts but I need more of an intro to Phil than the shooting of the gun. Can you sketch out this character in about 10-15 seconds? A couple of really juicy sound bites or one anecdote?

The gun shooting is good, but not the best intro to him because then we go to his family and friends immediately without knowing why we should care about them and about Phil. This is assuming a first-time viewer, of course.

I really like the music in the opening.

One more tidbit of advice: I had a documentary film professor at UCLA who used to call out-of-focus and shaky shots "cuticles" -- you know, like the bits of skin hanging off your fingernails that look all raggedy and get irritated and red? Cuticles. And she always said to "cut all the cuticles" because they don't add to your piece. So, the shot of "Phil's mom" in the opening that is mostly blurry and then goes into focus? That's a cuticle. Use only a steady, non-blurry shot, especially if you're using it to intro a character.

Hope this helps. You know I like your pod already; I'm just hoping it gets good enough for TV so my comments you can take 'em or leave 'em as you see fit.

OK, I'm going to finish watching the rest now....

  • Why should I care about this guy?

10 minutes and I have no clue.

"there are deeper underlying psychological problems here than marijuana. "

Marajuana is a symptom here, not a cause.

  • So immature, this kid is. Good story none-the-less. Hope it makes it man.

  • ok, now, him whipping a chair at his brother has nothing to do with weed. smoking does not make you do anything. your own actions are your own actions. honestly not afraid to say that i have smoked before, and never felt the need to do anything extreme. even when i got angry.

kinda sad he was a clepto though. some people just dont know how to use their conscience.
  • Sorry , but its not bull . the way this pod is set, it instantly takes you into poor phil and evil weed it,s remanicent of reefer madness.
    sickinjersey
  • Pot issues aside, I think Dave just managed to feature a most unlikable character. If he could mange to make us care for Phil, he would have a Sundance movie.
    AnaMireles
  • Phil is a kleptomaniac, bigot with a fondness for marijuana, and blames all the the stupid shit he does on the marijuana....leading to the whole "drugs are bad" propaganda b.s.

sickinjersey is right, this is a lot like 'reefer madness'
    Empty_Tank
  • i agree...stupid how they look at it as "evil" or something. like as soon as you smoke, you're instantly this horrible person that no one trusts. anyone and everyone has a friend that smoke marijuana. i know i do, and some of the are some of my best friends. they havent wronged me in any way. people are going to make they're own decisions regardless of marijuana or not.
now, acid or other crazy drugs, thats a whole other story. lol.
