300 dead cats in man's freezer

A Sacramento man was arrested Saturday after authorities found more than 300 cats and kittens stacked inside freezers in the man's home.
Officers were called out to the house on the 7400 block of 19th St. around 8:30 a.m. Saturday after a call to 911 was disconnected, according to Sacramento Police Sgt. Jim Hose.
Hose said Michael Parnell, 46, initially refused to allow officers inside his home. Fearing for the safety of Parnell's 81-year-old mother inside, officers entered to discover a horrible stench, a large number of live cats and unsafe conditions in the house.
Upon further investigation, Hose said officers found three large freezers filled with hundreds of dead cats and kittens. Investigators were working to determine why the man was saving the carcasses and if there was any cruelty involved.
Parnell, who also goes by the name of Michael Vondueren, was arrested and booked into the Sacramento County Jail on a felony charge of possessing an assault weapon as well as a misdemeanor count of obstructing an officer.
If investigators determine Parnell was involved in the deaths of the cats he could face additional criminal charges, Hose said.
Sacramento Adult Protective Services officials were also called out to the scene. It's unclear where the elderly woman was taken, but the house was sealed shut by order of a city building inspector.
"Every so often, if they wouldn't clean or something, there was a smell, an odor that just reeks on the street," neighbor Marquita Trotter said. "I was afraid to have a party here and have family come over."
Sacramento City Animal Care Services senior officer Pete Alarcon said about 20 live cats were taken from the home by animal control personnel. The surviving animals were being examined by a veterinarian.
"It's unusual that such a big number of animals be kept in the one residence," Alarcon said.

Any number of dead animal is too much...especially if the man had a hand in the death of these cats. Just sad. Imagine what kind of abuse there could've been to his elderly mother.

It is not so unusual that so many cats are kept in one residence, it is in fact quite widespread and can be found in many different countries. When I had a house with a huge garden in the countryside, I had on average some 30 cats. Now that I live in an apartment in town, I only have three or four at a time.

I may occasionally have one or two instant messenger windows open "at a time." I may be working on one or two projects at work "at a time." I would never be the caretaker to domestic animals a few "at a time." I want to provide the love and affection that an animal, kept as a pet, deserves. Some people are able to love more than one pet at time - I'm one of them - but, I feel that pets should never be kept as such.. "just because." -

Nothing appaling about it, mconway1 - all my cats received good care, food, attention and love, and I never kept them "just because". Most of them were abandoned cats which were dumped in my property. Many of them were very ill, and they all got full veterinary care as well as sterilization. Now that I live in an apartment in town, I cannot take in loads of cats. If I said "at a time", it is because I cannot cater to more than 4 cats, and as some of them died of old age, I adopted new cats because I love cats (and dogs and all other animals, but my physical limitations do not allow me to keep a dog), but four is my present limit with regards to space and means.

Something like this happened here in Las Cruces, NM too. The lady had her daughter and her mother living in a small house with 80 cats, 2 horses, and a goat. It was crazy. Then like 3 weeks later, some guy who was on city council was found to have 50 cats in his residents...

300 cats...Well, before I talk about how messed up this whole situation is...Let me just say that now I'll probably have the image of 300 Spartan cats or something...Ahem, anyway...This is disgusting. I hope he didn't actually kill the animals. But even if he didn't, what reason would he have to keep so many carcasses in a freezer? Seriously, the world is so f'd right now...Yesterday that German girl found three infant bodies in her freezer, and now innocent animals. This is so messed up.

With 6 billion people in the world, odds are there will be plenty of nutters like this guy. Gawk and move on; it's not worth holding up the traffic for too terribly long. -
Seems like the only use for that many cats in a freezer is to sell to Chinese restaurants. The cats in the kettle at the Peking Moon I'd bet.

Sorry people, but facts are facts. Just because the West has an aversion to eating cats doesn't mean it's wrong.
"In the vast majority of cases, cats (and dogs) are eaten because they are a source of protein. They can be fed on scraps unfit for human consumption and convert those scraps into edible protein. This is no different from the family pig fed on household leftovers and windfall fruit and killed to feed the family during the winter. In some countries they are eaten through choice e.g. as a gourmet item, elsewhere they are eaten through lack of choice i.e. other animal protein sources are in short supply. Depending on how it is prepared and served, cat is described as tasting either like rabbit or like chicken." -

there has to be some set of circumstances beyond the grossness of it all that led up to 300 cats in a freezer
i really feel for them.

About the cats, this is really sick. I'm sure he has some serious mental issues and probably couldn't let them go when they died. At least, I hope that's what happened and he didn't actually kill them. -
