A volcano has erupted in southern Chile, scattering ash over the surrounding area and forcing more than 4,000 people to leave their homes. The eruption of the Chaiten volcano caught local authorities by surprise, as experts say it has been dormant for at least 450 years.

  • Chile is one of the most volcanic countries on Earth, with more than 100 active volcanoes. Of those, experts say about 20 are in danger of erupting at any time.

Just because it's dormant for so long doesn't mean it won't erupt again. If it was dormant, that's all the more reason to be cautious, no? What's to stop it from exploding if it hasn't in such a long time? However, I feel bad for those who lost their homes and property.
  • Yeah, my Grandparents told me about this. I'm Chilean and even I found it odd that the volcano actually erupted. I've never actually seen those slopes but I've wondered why people ski on a smoking volcano... Yeah. It smokes and people still ski on it...
File that under stupid but awesome.

  • On my list of things to do before I die: watch a volcano erupt (from a safe distance, of course, or from a helicopter!)

  • Here in the US we have a national park filled with visitors year-round on a dormant supervolcano that could erupt at any time. That would be Yellowstone National Park.

  • Ehhhhh

I don't think it's likely at all that yellowstone would erupt.

But you make a good point.

  • Wow, check out this photo. The ash cloud is creating it's own weather. Absolutely apocalyptic looking!

  • @Saladin - the point is, any volcano noted as "dormant" has the chance to erupt again at any time. Even the experts admit that they don't fully understand enough to be able to predict when eruptions will occur - as today's eruption illustrates.
