All Michael Buday wanted to do was take the last name of his wife, Diana Bijon, when they married.
But it took two years, a lawsuit alleging sex discrimination and a change in California law before he picked up his new drivers license in the name of Michael Bijon on Monday.

In Switzerland, men have had this possibility for many years now.
The only thing that has not yet been determined is how to define the male equivalent of "maiden name". :)-

Cool! I think that is one giant step for man and one small leap for California. I see nothing wrong with a man taking his wife's last name. I really don't see anything wrong with both simply "combining" their names.
-
This is one of the most absurd stories I've ever heard! I can't understand why the state of California wouldn't let this man use whatever last name he wanted. What the hell business is it of the state's??

And they lived happily ever after.

I'm going back to "Cali" to "Cali" to "Cali" to "Cali". I don't think so!

I can change my name to Halifah Bonifa Jenkins, but a man who wants to take his wife's last name has to go through this bull crap? What the heck?!
-
So you can legally change your name to Warrior, but you can't take your wife's name? Very strange.

Old traditions die hard. A Rose is a rose is a . . .
Really? So maybe I could change my last name to Warrior Princess? cool. nah. . . . nobody would believe me. -
Perfect example of not having culture and how men get neutered. I guess being a men is not the thing to be.

Our name is all we have, why sell out?
-

Uh, exactly, our name is all we have so why should we lose it so some losers can carry on HIs family name. What about her family name? And, if your "last"name or anything like that makes you a man than I feel sorry for you and "Boy" kind.

OK, i know im going to catch a bunch of slack for this--but I think its bad enough when a woman doesnt take her husbands last name--but why would a man ever want to take her last name? Call me old school but i like to follow the traditional marriage in that sense....
on the contrary--my friend just changed his first and last name just because and he had no problem with that..im assuming this man didnt want to pay the dues to change the name bc when you get married, its free....he probably just wanted the publicity.... -
This is going to screw up genealogy research forever. Off with their heads. Good for California. I'm surprised it took so long. They are usually pretty liberal straight forward thinking people.

I love it! I always said that I didnt want to change my name but I would welcome my husband to take mine. I never knew that it was such a pain in the ass to do but now thanks to these guys my dreams can come true with ease!
-
Once again, it's NOT harming anyone. Good for you Michael Bijon. End the nanny state!
-
well, his name may sound, or at least potentialy be mispronounced, like one of those european toilets =P LOL
=D maybe that's another good reason this guy went to court for an otherwise wack idea...speaking from largely prejudiced American standards anyway =D -
i'd never do it, but it's nice to have the choice. it's always nice to have choice.
maybe if i met a woman with the last name Tree.
i'd like that.-

This is so cool. And long over due. It's so wrong that it's always the woman that has to compromise her identity from the moment the ring goes on in a marriage.

tsk "wrong"? whoa =P pfff... such a strong "moral" connotation to that! =D let's not forget more than a lot of women are more than happy to take a man's name, especially if he's 'the one' they love, and two indeed do become 'one.' Love doesn't quibble about superficial "identity" issues like that...and if you enter a relationship with such shallow resentments like that, I'll put my money down that boy ain't gonna stick it out no matter who's phukn name goes on the certificate! =D freakn feminist demagogues... who's next on the soap box? =P
-
Did he ask his wife's father for his permission to use his name ?
I hope he did -
=D yeah no one ever really thought about "Dad" now did they (we) =P lol
-
HOORAY! We need to not be so sexist in this country! My goodness! People don't seem to realize it goes both ways... and it's still a very real thing. I say, Good for him and I hope to see more of this!
-
"it goes both ways..."
0.o in and out, y'mean?
=P lol just kidding! sorry to be acting so "badly" =D -
Changing your name is free expression/will.
