What's really in the food you eat?

Discovering what's really in the food you eat can be depressing. You've surely heard that Americans eat as much as two pounds of insects per year without knowing it. But that seems pretty benign compared with the other stuff you may be ingesting. Pesticides, rodent droppings, way more fat than you had ever imagined... Fortunately there are web resources to scare you / gross you out / educate you about what you're throwing down the hatch. This new information may not keep you from your favorite greasy spoon — nor should it — but it may help you choose some healthier or more sanitary options for your general snacking and dining.

  • Eating 2 lb of insects a year is better than 2 lb of insecticide, isn't it? Maybe we're getting both though. Nevermind.

  • Just like the milk you drink in the morning with your cereal, or the water you bathe with, there's no cover...

  • The hormones that are injected into milking cows causes the cows to produce milk year-round rather than the natural period of time after having a calf. The extra strain on the cow’s organs to produce ever increasing amounts of milk 360 days of the year causes their body's immune systems allot of stress reducing their resistance to infection. To counter that they are then injected with large amounts of antibiotics but it does not clear up all infection 100%, resulting in puss. To make up the costs of the antibiotics cows are often fed large amounts of old newspaper that is sometimes used to mop up cow urine and other fluids. So, you can expect every non-organic glass of milk you drink to come from a cow full of hormones, antibiotics, newsprint, some urine, and puss; and that DOES transfer to the milk it produces.

I stopped drinking milk after I read that… cheers!

  • Trying, that it so true. That is exactly why I only drink soy or organic milk...everyone makes fun of me about it to, but I just turn the other cheek. lol

  • There is nothing wrong with eating bugs. Lots of people do it. Milk is nasty though I stay away from that stuff.

  • Don't be afraid of insects or even droppings, people have been eating dirty stuff forever. It's good for you, builds the immune system. Stay away from anything anti-bacterial.

But insecticides and hormones are D:

    Bad news bears.

  • They do sell milk from cows that haven't been injected with hormones, so that's what I try to buy. If all else fails: soy.

  • I think we need to stop looking at the abstract atom and start looking at the big picture. Fears are only made when you see them, you can tell a blind man to walk into gun fire, like you can sell a man a sandwich, just live your life and only question what bothers you.

  • Sorry to break it to you "organic" and Soy consumers. I watched a French documentary that mentioned that Monsanto has gone and tampered with the soy bean just like the corn and god knows what else. I also read an article that Costo was getting sued because of their "organic" milk. It turns out that the supplier of this milk had so many violations that it could not call its milk "organic".

I think I'm taking it back old school and start eating dirt again... just like when I was a kid.

  • Titopadilla, that is true, there are some "Soy" and/or "organic" milks that do contain harmful chemicals. If you do your research, you will know which ones do and don't. There is no purity in this world, but a little hope never hurts ;)

Powdered milk is about the closest to pure you'll ever get.

  • sad subject. so many issues from all stand points, I don't need to be a PETA member to feel bad for the animals and ultimately for all of us. We leave the work to government to 'protect' us, to make it easy for us. They don't care, the bottom line will always be money not human beings sake. I turned to soy years ago when I had my first child. Soy is a better alternative, but now there is information out about how Soy is also genetically modified, and the processing of the soy is not green or eco friendly at all... one thing to think about is let's try not to jump to conclusions too quickly, red, get informed, questions things, and make informed decisions hopefully with some heart involvement as well.

  • Soy has allot of estrogen in it. I drink rice or almond milk now. Great stuff!

  • You should see what's in your cleaning products, shampoos, and makeup. It's not pretty. And we wonder why cancer is on the rise.
  • Cow milk is not meant for humans. Back in the day it was healthy because cows were treated with reverence and considered holy. So what came out of them was actually nutritious (body mind connection existed before yoga), and now with the way we tie our cows up to milking machines and let them rot standing up, the crap you drink is disgusting, and borders on nutrition.

  • Monsanto is taking over the world... (And no, that's not off topic.)
    Elligirl
  • Elligirl you are on topic, Monsanto scares me to death.

Here is the question that I continue to ask; why is it that food in US and Canada has no GMO labeling?

    That is an important question.

If you had a choice between GMO ingredients in your can of tomatoes for example or not, which would you choose? btw, the ingredients in tomatoes that would be GMO would be HFCS, and it would be better to leave that stuff out of everything. ( the corn is gmo'd.)

If there is no big deal about GMO, then just tell me what it is in, that way I can choose. Because I don't want to eat GMO> Seems fair.

I could go on and on.....
    yes, Monsanto is bad news.

  • The soilent food is people!
    iknew
  • Totally, queenofit! When Monsanto sues farmers who want to be able to label their milk as "monsanto free", you know something's very, very wrong!
    Elligirl
  • You are so right Ellgirl, I get so frustrated with this entire assault upon our food supply.

I realize we (citizens of USA) have a tough road to travel fighting Monsanto in their own territory. But we have to speak out against them.

Right now in the USA they are growing gmo; corn, soy, cotton and canola. From all I can read, this process was touted to save farmer money on their chemical usage. But, after a short time, the farmers stated they did not reduce use of chemicals, but had to increase their chemicals that they must buy from Monsanto. Big money maker for Monsanto...

It just goes on and on....I better stop.

  • I don't mind eating insects, actually.
They are supposedly quite good for you, and fried grasshoppers actually look f*cking delicious.
    No, really.

All this other crap, though...you know.
    Humdrum
  • The so called fact that people eat 2 pounds of insects is false. Merely an urban myth with no basis in reality.
    observer2121
  • Why isn't the media all over Monsanto...wait, duh... right... good thing monsanto came into the discussion.

  • Genetically modified foods, pesticides, lack of sanitation practices when processing foods, etc., no wonder people have illnesses like cancer, diabetes, heart disease in this country.

Look at other countries that live on better, fresher, more natural foods. Not boxed, frozen, processed and packaged like we do here in the USA.

Those cancer rates are way lower than here in the USA. Cancer is big business over here. Everwhere I look there's a new "cancer center" going up someplace. Someone's making a huge amount of cash out of cancer. My uncle just died of cancer, my father is a cancer survivor, my grandmother died of cancer and I've had people in my extended family die of cancer as well.

I think we all know someone who has died of cancer. There's something that's causing this "new growth" inside our bodies, maybe it's all the crap we put into it?

  • Hey, wanna stop eating all that weird crap and knock the wind right out Monsanto's sails? BUY LOCAL! Support your local farmers. Grow veggies in your backyard, on your roof, anywhere you can. Join a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Shop at farmer's markets. Even if your local guys aren't certified organic, you can go look at how they farm. And that little bit of extra money you pay goes straight to the farmer, who can use it to improve their practices, and that money stays in your community! RELOCALIZE!!!
    Kati_kat
  • Kati_kat your response is great!

I totally agree that buying locally is going to be our saving grace. I have put a link here( my brother-in-laws oldest daughter) she has really come up with a great little idea (imho).

She is providing a delivery service to the town folks (in her community) who want her fresh farm raised goodies. I would love to see this type of thing in more communities. I am sure there are and they need support. Granted farmers markets provide a great service as well. But the reason I like what this gal is doing, is that it is creative and innovative.

The more options available, the more people can buy locally!
    queenofit
  • Great posts, KatiKat and queenofit! I shop at the local farmer's markets every other day, so it's hard to think of people who simply don't have access to fresh local food. Delivering it to needy areas is a wonderful idea!
    Elligirl
  • I have to admit it was hard switching to local when the food can be twice the price, but these are the businesses we need to be supporting (not the giants who don't care what they are feeding us and are only focused on the dollar). Once you make the switch you will notice you feel better physically, because the food is healthier. Celery and peanut butter at Trader Joes is what it says it is, celery and peanut butter. The seemingly same snack at Safeway was in fact not. I noticed a hell of a lot of ingredients and when I looked closer the peanut butter was a "peanut butter mix" that consisted of corn syrup, sugar, food coloring etc. It is a crime they get away with this. Consumers are being duped into products with fillers and cancer causing agents. BS!
