hmmmm...well, in all honesty, I think you've put your finger on something that women from the generation under observation here know, but don't know at the same time. It's one of those unexamined behaviors, a default setting, if you will.
I'm not sure I would characterize this behavior so much a pathology as I would more of an apologetic, but the end result is that you uncover that same need to justify success. Yes, I think it is a gendered response, although it seems to me to be one that is also very white. I know it is not pc to make race-based observations, but very few of the successful women of color that I know are positing this apologetic...but that is another discussion, and maybe another woman's biography.-
