Russia's deployment of extra troops in the breakaway Georgian region of Abkhazia has brought the prospect of war "very close", a minister of ex-Soviet Georgia said on Tuesday.
Separately, in comments certain to fan rising tension between Moscow and Tbilisi, the "foreign minister" of the breakaway Black Sea region was quoted as saying it was ready to hand over military control to Russia.
"We literally have to avert war," Temur Iakobashvili, a Georgian State Minister, told reporters in Brussels.
Asked how close to such a war the situation was, he replied: "Very close, because we know Russians very well."
"We know what the signals are when you see propaganda waged against Georgia. We see Russian troops entering our territories on the basis of false information," he said.
At a banking event in Madrid, Vice Finance Minister Dimitri Gvindadze said the Georgian economy was holding up despite the tensions. However ratings agency Fitch said a conflict would likely hit Georgia's ratings but not immediately Russia's.

Things aren't looking so hot in the world right now.
-
Yeah it does seem that one misstep and the world will go boom right now. Hopefully everyone can keep a cool head and avoid attacking one another.
-
and this marks the beginning of World War 3
-
Georgia is just looking at Russia like an X girlfriend, they dont want that hoe wondering around in their house they just want the beast to leave them alone. Bravo Georgia about time you stood up for yourself.
-
hating on Bush and the US is the cool thing to do - being against "war" is the in thing - but then this makes news . maybe i've been too busy being cool to remember Bosnia or Chechnya . i'd love to be a pacifist - i'd be willing to commit suicide if world peace would follow .
-
don't care. let them figure it out
-
And I was thinking that Georgia might go to war against Florida.
-
"i'd love to be a pacifist - i'd be willing to commit suicide if world peace would follow ."
heh.
But seriously, what is Georgia to do against Mother Russia...?
If I knew more about the intricacies of Eastern European politics, I'd have much more to say... -
I highly doubt anything will happen. People get too worked up over threats.

-
So the state of Georgia going to war? Just kidding.
-
The blame game has started and tension is rising. Play it cool Georgia - don't give Russia a reason to throw the first punch.

Not another war. So many wars, so many countries.

Georgia's "democratic" elections were financed and orchestrated by the Bush administration, Georgia's president is a Bush whore. Abkhazia is peopled by Russian-speaking pro-Russia people and doesn't want to be a part of Georgia any more. What is happening there is the natural consequence of the US and many EU countries approving of Kosovo's "independence". Russia is perfectly right to act the way it is acting, especially as Georgia's president wants Georgia to be part of NATO and NATO is effecting military buildups and "anti-missile missiles" installations all around Russia - the purpose being the Bush administration's desire to destroy Russia. Kudos to Russia!
Stalin was from Georgia, and was a typical Georgian.-

Hopefully this situation becomes resolved soon. These things have proven in th past to be very unfortunate for not just the two countries but the entire world.

OH S*#& is all I have to say. Though I dought it will lead to WW3.
-
Stalin made Hitler look like a choirboy Vierotchka - and most of the 40 million ( the exact number can't be determined , of course ) people he killed were Russians - his own people . yeah , "typical georgian " huh ? go Stalin ! BTW - you may recall that Stalin and Hitler once had a treaty ....
-
The Russians were not "his own people", malathion, he was not Russian.

even better - he wasn't even Russian , but was responsible for 40 million killings as Russia's leader - i'm sure Georgia just loves that huh ? hold up - Russia wants to keep Georgia under it's control and Stalin was from there ? am i missing the sick irony here ? so Georgians are "Russians" or not ? enlighten me , please .
-
Many Georgians are very proud of the fact that Stalin was a Georgian, even today. Russia wants to defend its borders and its land against Bush & Co who are using their puppet and lackey Mikheil Saakashvili in order to hem-in and threaten Russia. What's wrong with that? Georgians are not Russians - different language, different alphabet, different mentality.

good . maybe that Georgian pride will compel more Georgians to kill Russian invaders , in the spirit of Stalin .
-
What Russian invaders? Abhkhazia is basically Russian and not truly a part of Georgia, and its people are asking Russia for help. May ten of yours be killed for every one of ours, malathion.
