Rock Port Missouri, population 1,300, is the first 100% wind powered city in the US. Loess Hill Wind Farm, with four 1.25-MW wind turbines, is estimated to generate 16 gigawatt hours (16 million kilowatt hours) of electricity annually. 13 gigawatts hours of electricity have historically been consumed annually by the residents and businesses of this town.

love it!

It's great to see a town stepping up to the plate and setting a new standard for the use of renewable energy solutions to current issues such as the greenhouse effect and the depletion of the ozone layer. Hopefully more areas across the nation and world will follow a similar model.
-
Its great to watch something like this on a small scale and figure out the pros and cons. Then implement it on a larger scale. I've read too much mixed messages on ethanol, too get too excited about anything
-
great news. nothing like a city w/a population of 1300 showing 300 million others the benefits of alternative energy technologies, and how to properly address the challenge of climate change.
-
This also becomes the first town NOT to be too concerned about THIS:
"The price of crude oil could soar to $200 a barrel in as little as six months, as supply continues to struggle to meet demand, a report has warned." -
Nothing but a good start. Now it's time for the of Missouri to take Rock Port's lead.
-
Wonderful! It's about fricken time!
-
Missouri pwns.
-
Yet another shining example of what the rest of us all need to start doing. Towns and cities around the US should look at this as a potential model for their own energy changes.

wind power isnt a reliable or probabale solution to our problem, its a good start but a weak one.
-
Such an inspiration! Although wind might not be the only answer, its definitely an integral part of the solution, and one which produces much more positive results than digging under the ice in Alaska for oil. Let's pursue THESE solutions rather than continue relying on outdated kinds of energy (that come from coal and oil)

what's interesting is that the powers against Mother Nature will never overcome her force...
-
I hate to say this but... I wonder if now people will flock to Rock Port, causing a population growth too quick for the perfect eco-town to accommodate AND keep 100% wind-powered... it's close enough to a big city (Omaha).
-
Great inspiration for all of us!!!
We can do it. We needed a clear view of the problems to find the multitude of solutions. Great news.-

i agree that this is a good step forward, but it isnt the solution to the global problem, the spanish and there solar towers and the soon to be project in australia with the upside down funnel to turbine approach is a much more realistic one, and how come nobody has ever thought to put wind farm style power plants in deep rivers or the ocean...the currents are really strong and will always be there
-
Great news. Thanks for sharing.
A menu of renewable energy sources and varieties of applications from large scale to small community and home generated along with conservation is a way to have a multitude of solutions that work to power the world and heal the earth.
One Earth - Think About It/Think About It -
I really hope this isn't the last. I love seeing small towns showing their own country how to really handle things. Sure they may use wind power, but the idea is renewable, and CLEAN energy. Please white house, take a look.

Finally, all the hot air coming from the politicians is useful.
-
sometimes, some good news...
-
Great News for America, bad news for the greedy Buhies and Arabs. Right on Rock Port, Missouri, I hope other towns and cities follow suit.

bout time, sure is better than growing food for fule which is not all its spun up to be

Wind is free$!!!!!

I hate people who are always positive and want to act like everyone's mom.. Jesus.. On a side note, its terrifying to think about how easily oil could top $200 a barrel.. Its gone up, what, like $40 in the last year and is now like $124?? Jesus. I would like to imagine that this is a sign that the oil mongers know that alternative energy is about to take over.. they will have to pay the button soon.. Shit.

About an hour out of town, from where I live; there is this huge lake, and the hillside is lined with dozens of these wind turbines. Sometimes they seem just as beautiful as the lake itself, and to be honest...Far more interesting. It would be an interesting experiment, for more towns to adopt this program. Also, as an artistic outlet, the citizens of each town should be able to place their own designs on them which relate to the theme of positive impacts of alternative energy...
Sure, that may sound farfetched...But it's one of my many "American Dreams".-

Anyone listen to Sirius? Grateful Dead channel had a women who called in last week talking about the negative side effects that windmills creates - scary stuff actually - like the death of animals - loss of habitat for people and birds - not to mention freaky side effects like illness and noise bleeds in both humans and cows associated with living near them> needs to be researched more before this gets headie approval - solar power gets my vote

Would love for this to be around the nation, but it cant be done everywhere. Here in Florida would have those things dug up every hurricane, but i dont see a reason why we couldnt make them hurrican proof.
-
Hi everyone!Just dropping by to tell you that the same is happening in Italy where the small town of Alberona in the South is all wind powered!

between wind and solar energy we could get ahead and free ourselves significantly from pollution and oil dependence - one person at a time, enabling us to take personal responsibility for our power uses as a viable part of our energy solutions! there is a great company i discovered called PacWind who make incredible vertical wind turbines that are silent, bird safe, need very little if at all maintenance and generate power with very little wind. for the people that have any cash at all, placing one or two of these small turbines on the side of their house or office buildings would also eliminate the need of large parcels of land, travelling the energy, and bird damage and gives us all a way of helping the bigger picture before all our money drains away on high oil prices and medical expenses. (www.pacwind.net) (i am not affiliated with this company, i just think they have a great product, i went down to their facility to check them out i was so curious and they are what they say they are - good people and great product).
• Completely silent
• Completely stable
• Useable power in 5+ mph winds
• Safe in winds up to 100+ mph
• Bird friendly
• Environmentally friendly
• Maintenance Free
• Simple to install
• Built to last a lifetime
• Stackable
• Fully scalable
• Install them fo -
don't publicize this too much,
wind might go up to $3.90 a gallon.-

don't wanna be pessimistic, but major cities like Manhattan, Philadelphia, Boston, have no room for these things (although im sure surrounding counties do) and with high rise buildings everywhere, not much wind can get through. also, the consumption of these cities, is incredible. like think about how much Orlando pumps? but they could get those things in the gulf stream. however, in this cities, with all these buildings, how bout solar panels? (for some reason they cost a lot) Ppl gotta get together and yell a bit till big companies give in.

I'd just like to point out that industry needs oil for lubrication, although synthetics can replace that, still, oil will be needed for a long time. It's the reduction of oil that is paramount here, and thus power generation, and appliance usage, cars! are the basic necessities that can be powered by solar. As for turbines power by water or wind, I feel that its a great step forward, but wind/power is not something can be used everywhere on the planet like solar can.
China for example is just coming online, and is still using coal for power. if any country should be thinking about alternatives, it's China as their coal reserves are running out as well as they are continuing to build coal power producing factories, and have a growing population that will definitely effect the world environment.
Wind is good for some areas, but not most, therefore, I still propose Solar for most all energy needs since solar can be used all over the planet - as long as there is sun - I guess north pole is out, and wind/water is in for those regions, or power can be brought in via cables from other regions with sun.
Nuclear power can be replaced at this point in the technology of solar alternatives in terms of Mega/GigaWatts. There is no fall out, and is being used more and more as the word spreads around the world about the need to cut oil usage more and more.
Oil is not the only source of power.
There are many parts of out lives that depend on oil, but put simply, the solar community is stating the extra uses of oil and that pollute more than anything, is cars and electrical production and can be substitutes if the price is right for all concerned.
I am all for solar cars, solars power, solar just about anything. but remember, rubbers, lubricants, so forth at this point in history rely on oil and that would be the next point of interest to reduce once Solar power is fully used globally.
A GreenerFurture should be on everyone's minds.
Oly Ander, California.
