Senator Obama gave a definitional speech in Raleigh, NC on the night of the Democratic Primaries in Indiana and North Carolina. Some might consider it a convention acceptance speech.

It was a redefinition of the American Dream.

Obama spoke of dignity and work and the America he loves. He spoke of the America that isn't about game playing or slicing and dicing and name calling or spin and division and distraction; he spoke of an America defined by change from people, from below--and a Washington and Wall Street out of touch with core values.

He spoke of trusting the American people to realize we need a government which stands up for families tricked out of their homes . He spoke of compassion and security as American values, not liberal or conservative values.

The ability to define and redefine the conversation is important to winning any debate...change/revolution [apparently] is the message they wish to send. *see 500 billion 'change' signs, banners, stickers - [poor trees] :(

and i don't believe he appears to actually be 'changing his mind' about anything.

But....You bring up a very important point that is certain to be targeted, magnified and exploited in the general electshin campaign.

this metanarrative -- Obama is "too much" change, unpatriotic, might be an elitist secret muslim, crazy preacher -- will [has already] dominated the election conversation...and Obama's campaign.

...it was pretty clear in this^ speech...he spent most of it asserting[defining] his patriotism

in a perfect world, he could just brush it off and elevate the conversation...but, everyone's pretty tired of policy talk at this point - and, noone really wants to debste the former harvard law review editor..so, much like the dem primary catfight, he and mccain will go no-holds-barred trench warfare...most of each campaign's resources will go toward attacking - defending each other's person.

at this point, so few voters are undecided about policy issues, debates are irrelevant...vry little middle ground in middl america.

all thats left is personalities - who i want to have a beer with and watch on the evening news for the next 4-8 years....can mccain even drink beer at his age?

a weekly, half hour reality-drama tv program featuring the McCain / Obama families would surely answer all the most important questions on American's minds and wallets.
