Struggling up a steep and tortuous path, forced to carry overweight tourists, it is a sight that appalled the nation.

Last year the Daily Express alerted the world to the donkey abuse on the island of Santorini.

In response to the international revulsion, Greek officials promised new laws to protect donkey welfare.

But this week, the Daily Express found the animals were still being abused and a new code of conduct has been derailed by Greek bureaucrats and red tape.

The donkeys now face yet another gruelling summer ferrying tourists from cruise ships up 680 steps to the island’s capital.

If someone sees a donkey being mistreated or looking unwell they can report it

Thousands of readers backed our Let’s Save The Donkeys crusade.

A code of conduct has been drawn up to set animal load limits and give strict guidance for stick-wielding donkey masters.

But a local government source said that it would not be in place for at least another 12 months.

  • It's sick what those poor guys are used for, they often even get abused during training and everything.
