World's oldest tree points to global warming impact

The world’s oldest living tree has been found in Sweden, along with remnants of several other generations of it. A ripe 9,550 years old, this special spruce tree in Fulu Mountain, Dalarna, has profound implications for climate change.

The tree is single-stemmed and stands 5 meters — about 16.4 feet – tall. Researchers at Umeå University found decaying wood remnants in the soil that date back 375, 5,660, 9,000 and 9550 years, representing generations of the same genetic individual.

For thousands of years, the spruce appeared in a shrub formation called krummholz. But with warming in the last century, the tree changed its growth and became the single-stem spruce seen in this photo.

World's oldest tree points to global warming impact

  • Here is the real story from the British Telegraph Thursday:
The world's oldest tree has been found in Sweden, a tenacious spruce that first took root just after the end of the last ice age, more than 9,500 years ago.

The tree has rewritten the history of the climate in the region, revealing that it was much warmer at that time and the ice had disappeared earlier than thought. [...]

It had been thought that this region was still in the grip of the ice age but the tree shows it was much warmer, even than today, [Prof Leif Kullman at Umeå University] says.

“Spruces are the species that can best give us insight about climate change,” he says.

The summers 9,500 years ago were warmer than today, though there has been a rapid recent rise as a result of climate change that means modern climate is rapidly catching up.

Lets not leave out crucial information next time
  • global warming is a crock

  • It shows there had been a cycle of warming and cooling for thousands of years without our impact.

  • We are a mere speck in the earth's timeline. For all we know, every other speck could've been a whole other civilization. Where things played out differently.

    MATRIX STYLE.

  • interesting but honestly, this doesnt prove anything aside from climate change in the region, which may or may not have anything to do with global warming

  • Wait a minute, that tree has been alive for over 9,000 years?! Does anyone else think that's crazy? I thought trees had a life span around a hundred years. I bet it's seen some pretty crazy stuff. If trees could talk...

Well, the only way to find out is to cut it down and analyze it's rings. Where's my chainsaw? :P

To get back on subject, alman365 has a point. However, there may be certain elements of the tree that would give us clues into the global climate throughout the trees lifetime. But I have no idea what they would be since I'm not a dendrologist.

  • Tree older than Garden of Eden. H-m-m-m.

  • notonourwatch, um...I'm not trying to flame you or anything but dinosaur fossils have been aged way further back than this tree. I don't think you're making much of a point other than to get a rise out of some religious people, however unintentional.

  • If there was no warming we would still be in the iceage. I don't think Global warming is as much a threat as some people are making it out to be. I think the earth has it's own cycle.

  • weather change is cyclic. same thing is happening on mars. people don't understand this.

  • even tho global climate warming is 'natural', it shouldn't give excuse to MORE pollution and environmental degradition... c'mon people!

  • Maybe man is causing global warming, maybe we aren't. Either way why not recycle? Why not develop hydrogen vehicles? Imagine walking out on a bright and clear day in LA and enjoying the clean air.

Either way, we do have an impact on the environment; whether it is a climate shift or the destruction of another species. I don't see the point in getting mad about those who claim global warming is real. Lessening pollution and especially CO2 emissions isn't a bad thing no matter your perspective.

  • Hey, We Still are in an Ice Age.. Last time I looked at an atlas, there was ice, and lots of it.

  • Mankind will kill itself long before global warming can kill us

  • The earth did have climate change, that has been kind of unstable over the millions of years. But we have no idea what caused it back then. With the way history has a way of repeating itself...i think we should just do the whole "green thing"...and i agree clean air would be pretty cool...did anyone watch "Human Footprint"? very interesting...

  • Climate is cyclic, yes we know that thank you very much our resident Einsteins, which is why glaciers aren't in Hyde Park anymore.

However, I think it wiser to err on the side of caution and reduce our levels of emissions and pollutants. If Global Warming Theorists are wrong, we'll have a cleaner Earth if we follow their policies. If they are right and we don't follow their ideas, then we could be up the ole sh*t creek without a paddle.

  • It is really interesting since i found out that even here in the Philippines, many prosecutor did not even noticed about the dangers of losing an old tree.

A culture of rural areas change according to their growing trees like the society itself.

I might say that once the old trees are being changed, the new generation will show their true colors towards their community.

I have an adopted tree that is already twelve years old. My father did not even noticed that the tree grows with a mystery. I still remember when i am just a kid, the same phenomenon happened in that tree... I also saw the old tree gave me the leaves that i want to know more the origin of that tree....

Mystery of a tree lies in the heart of the one who saw it and who desire to protect them... they have kindness in their heart to give birth to a new kind of trees that show their hatred even to those who planted them.

  • it has been my thought that for those who believe they can "own" this world ...there is an interest in removing ALL the oldest life-forms from the environment; -much wisdom may be gained from quiet contemplation among the presence of those whose life spans greatly exceed our own [or our cultures], and this does not lend itself toward maintaining "the owners" greatest aim: keeping OUR awe and respect focused on >>Their Authority<<.
