Doesn't congress have anything better to do with their time then waste it worrying about video games and steroids in baseball? This is what we pay taxes for?

Yep, this guy's an idiot. Funny how this kind of thing always comes up during election cycles. Do voters really care about this BS?
-
Second Life isn't just a video game, it's a 3-d internet browser. This is just one more example of congress being out of touch with the people.
-
I guess that Rep. Mark Kirk didn't like how TDS reported on the congressional hearing that were conducted in SL so he's trying to get it outlawed.
Linden Labs has already started implementing measures for age verfication and keeping adult content from minors so he's a bit behind.
As always "When SL is outlawed, only outlaws will have SL" -
It definitely should not be a top priority in Congress. But SL is becoming incredibly widespread and the social, political, and economic implications of what can be done there should be considered. It's become a really important forum for social organization and things that happen in this virtual world definitely do affect real world psychology and behavior of participants. The only reason I can think it would be a concern in schools is that it could allow Columbine-type fantasies to fester and ultimately end up in the real world. But at the same time, SL might provide a kind of therapy for those who are having violent thoughts...
-
watch this comment being used hereI agree that in ten years we will be looking back thinking that we should have regulated SL. We can't possibly forsee the psychological implications this kind of fantasy world could fester. It's not a completely illogical thought. Let's stop being so defensive about our freedoms and rights and just think about things sensibly.
-
What kind of logic is that? By what definition is that thinking sensibly? "We can't possibly forsee the psychological implications this kind of fantasy world could fester"
You could also point out "We can't possibly forsee the psychological implications of the therapy that this kind of fantasy world could benefit from"
Both have equal weight depending on the people and the use it's put to. Again lets not get our exercise by jumping to conclusions and blaming the landscape for the emotional baggage that people drag along with them.

just a thought...try this one on for size. Reason for Congressional alarm? Try that the last thing they want is a competitive foreign currency ESPECIALLY one that could potentially arise in the exchange of funds that occur in Second Life!
It is indeed becoming a virtual place of exchange and business. I know folks that are making money from the virtual product being sold in SL. I mean think about it, could you imagine how bad that would look if the currencies created in the sub economy of second life grow strong while the American Dollar becomes (as Iran put it) a 'worthless piece of paper'?
Dogs and cats, living together...mass hysteria! -
tollster, you're scaring me...
-
Second life is like the internet. If you look for things not suitable for those under 18, you will find it.However, there IS a cleaner, and completely seperate teen second life for those under the age of 18.
-
i've never played this..but from what i've heard is that people get caught onto to this and start to treat as if they were actually living their 3D lives.
scary! -
the consciousness of computers/computing is no longer floating embers of light within the dreaming. It has morphed with humanities dreams;the noosphere made manifest.people dream of a new opperating system.people still dream about the future of ancient "civilizations"... MORE government? ***Warning!!!*** thoughtCrime!!!

Second life is a sweet game but some people end up making the game into their real life.

I don't know a whole lot about Second Life...My First Life seems to be keeping me interested enough....but aren't there sex islands and pornography in 2nd Life? If so, and these sex themes cannot be blocked in particular, then I see no reason why 2nd Life should be allowed in schools. Kids can't access pornography at k-12 public schools and it should stay that way.

If it bleeds it leads has always been the way to sensationalize the news. Why should you expect anything different with VR but to focus on the most negative aspects right?
-
Ban Second Life? You've got to be joking.
In one of my college courses we were toying around with the idea of one day holding actual classes in a virtual world.
