Irregular sleeping linked to obesity, smoking

People who sleep fewer than six hours a night — or more than nine — are more likely to be obese, according to a new government study that is one of the largest to show a link between irregular sleep and big bellies.

The study also linked light sleepers to higher smoking rates, less physical activity and more alcohol use.

The research adds weight to a stream of studies that have found obesity and other health problems in those who don't get proper shuteye, said Dr. Ron Kramer, a Colorado physician and a spokesman for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

"The data is all coming together that short sleepers and long sleepers don't do so well," Kramer said.

The study released Wednesday is based on door-to-door surveys of 87,000 U.S. adults from 2004 through 2006 conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics, part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Irregular sleeping linked to obesity, smoking

  • I smoke, i usually have either less than 5 or more than 9 and i am fine. I believe it has to do with that fatty garbage people are eating. They should stop makling up excuses for people who are fat. If they see it as someone else's fault, they're never going to do anything about it. I don't hate fat people, i just hate people who complain and blame their problems on everything but themselves.

PS that picture is horrifying! It looks like he's severely pregnant...ew

  • I have a feeling that guy has more problems than sleeping. GEEZE! I mean, is it a tumor? Does it really deserve a thumbs up? NO!

And on the sleeping topic - study's like this are just giving obesity excuses and false pretenses. Maybe the person who gets more than 9 hours is lazy and doesn't do much with the day, and maybe the lack of sleepers are staying up eating or drinking. There are so many factors that surround the sleep schedule, and we all know it's all about your lifestyle while you're awake - not while you're sleeping.

  • Well, he would be helping his health issues to lay off the beer. Liver or diabetes both don't do well with alcohol. I recall seeing some folks with hep c get swollen stomachs like that. I am not familiar with type 2 diabetes.

  • Sleep when you're tired, wake up when you're not. Don't eat when you're full, and eat well when you're not. God really thought this out, just don't screw with it.

  • This is disgusting! I work 2 jobs and on one of those jobs I walk 2.4 miles to work and back 4 days a week. I am also sleep deprived, (seriously my body does not know day or night because of my schedule!) I am overweight (but am losing weight because of my walking to and from work) and I smoke! And honey I would rather be dead than have a belly that looks like that. I guess what I am trying to say here is if you want to no matter the circumstances you can lose the weight. So this study is BS along with a vast majority of these so called "studies". One day eat all this... one day if you do eat that you will get cancer... I gave up on studies years ago/ I have come to the conclusion.... eat healthy and maintain an active lifestyle and guess what... you will feel better about yourself and you will lose weight. No pills... Just do it!

  • Impresssive not one stretch mark.

I am over weight now but I wasn't a year ago. I don't blame it on my sleep, I know I need to excerise how I use to. I use to do deskside support but now I do Help Desk and let me tell you, I'd rather walk around aimlessly looking for your cubicle than sit my butt on a chair all day to fix your problems.

  • Fat people sleep less than people with normal BMIs, that sure is a fact.. surely those moving around faster would burn the blubber @ a faster rate?

  • That picture is really distracting. I don't think I've fully read the article because of that huge belly. It's bigger than a pregnant woman's.

  • Well if its oversleeping that is creating that belly then he must of been in hibernation.

  • WOW that picture is gnarly! Sleep deprived individuals are more prevalent to be obese, partly because they do not go through enough sleep cycles or spend the proper amount of time in each cycle including REM.
