Hand in hand - Israeli and Arab children learn together

In Israel today, Jewish and Arab citizens live in a highly segregated environment, often in closely adjoining areas and in many regions throughout the state of Israel. In the most recent census of Israeli citizens, 20% are Arab and 80% are Jewish. Today there are few opportunities for meaningful and deep interaction between members of these two major groups, especially in the fields of elementary and secondary education, which are almost entirely segregated.
In 1997, Hand in Hand Center for Jewish-Arab Education is Israel was founded to build peace between Jews and Arabs in Israel through development of bilingual and multi-cultural schools. Elementary schools were founded in Jerusalem and in the Galilee region of Israel; in 2004 a third school was opened in Wadi Ara. In September 2007, the fourth Hand in Hand school through the parents's group Hagar opened in Beersheva. Under the unique Hand in Hand Education model, each school is co-directed by Arab and Jewish co-Principals; and each classroom is co-taught by Jewish and Arab teachers. Students at each grade level are balanced between Arab and Jewish children. Students at all grade levels are taught in both Hebrew and Arabic, learning to treasure their own culture and language while understanding the difference of others around them.---

This is beautiful. This is what we need. This is how you break the cycle of hate. People doing what their governments will not do. Truly seeking peace instead of using countries as pawns for their own benefit. Thank you for posting this and yes, I too would love to see more of this on CURRENT tv.

This is how it always should have been. Thanks.
Now, such schools should be mandatory in Gaza and the West Bank.-

This is our future.
-
good news.
-
It starts with the children. You teach them to be tolerant to their neighbors and they'll grow up to be tolerant human beings. It's just that simple.
-
Also why can't Israel and Palestinians send their kids here instead of the army and training camps....this should be easy to do in an incremental way.
It is sad if the reason is that no one profits from it..no war machines or wall building companies..
This is certainly a high priority item to channel funds to ..if a few work then why not more.

This is another program called Seeds of Peace that I heard about a few years ago that brings teens from Israel and Arab lands together. It has now expanded to South America and other areas of the world. This is hope. This is how you educate and empower young women as well. This is what we should be doing with our time and money instead of devoting it to 400 billion dollar defense budgets and wars for oil. If we do not start with our children now, that hatred will only go on. I truly hope this story makes it to tv.

It's amazing seeing people, let alone children, come together and tolerate one another. They're the future for both religions...Hopefully this will bring forth peace in the future.

Check this out... how are the Jews of Iran being treated?

It still baffles me, as much as it did when I was a little girl, that all the religions preach peace, but their spiritual teachers and followers so often kill and destroy in their God's name.
People say and pray for Peace, Pax, Shalom, Salaam, Skenon, but where is the PEACE.
There is an eastern teaching that calls us to practice compassion, not only for the victims, but also for the perpertrators, for the pain, whether imposed or self-inflicted, that brought them to their actions, and the karma they bring upon themselves when they abuse and kill.
When you practice compassion for the abused and the abuser, the killer as well as the victim, your heart opens, you move beyond thoughts of revenge, and you see how we are all related.
As Dr. King Jr. reminded us, Violence begets violence in an unending spiral...Only love and light can conquer war and destruction.
We are all related. Ho! Mitakuye Oayasin. All my relations say the Lakotah when they pray to Wakan Takan, the Great Mystery.
Lakotah teachers say we are Star People, who are also our relations, and that we originate from the Pleiades.
Now Western scientists have "discovered" that human beings very substance is related to other beings in the animal, plant, the fungi families and even the stardust from exploding stars.
Scientists have also discovered that we are light beings and that the life energy that connects us is light energy, as indigenous and ancient healers have taught for centuries as long ago as the Ayuvedic healers in India 5,000 years ago and back to our indigenous ancestors on each continent who moved energy through the body and cleared blockages to its flow through their hands like Reiki and Western practioners of energy medicine do today.

This is a shining example of what putting the past behind you can do. Two disparate groups working together towards a common future.
This is beautiful... -
Inspiring and beautiful story. I like Cosmo_Plavix's "Kids freshly minted still see clearly" comment. So true. Another moving story about the positive role that the children might play in resolving the conflict is in the documentary film "Promises."
-
Stop the hate, spread the love.
We need to hear more about projects like this to give everyone hope that change can happen. -
This is the reality of what i'm currently studying now. I think we tend to underestimate the power of learning another language to help promote cultural understanding and appreciations. big ups to this school.

Yes, this is wonderful. Yes, the children are still innocent enough not to harbor any resentment about the past. They are imbued with the spirit of goodness, which so often gets perverted by age old prejudices which are handed down fom generation to generation.
In truth, the sins of the fathers should never be thrust upon the impressionable children and this futuristic breakthrough is evidence of the positive effect that such programs can have toward the formation of a more non-hostile co-existence for all peoples of this world. That we can bring together the different mindsets of people to understand one another through art and education is a precept that has been taught by all of the good prophets..."embrace thine enemy..."
The idea of sending the students to a military school is not necessarily a bad one, but should be considered after the youth have learned to appreciate one another's differences, after they have learned that we can all co-exist. A lot of countries demand that all citizens devote some time to serving in the military. The military is not normally a bad thing. It's just bad when it is perverted to serve the egoistic agendas of disgraceful demagouges. For now, we still need and must build a respect for and appreciation for good military principles...to defend true democracy on this planet, without having to do battle to obtain it...
However, it is important that we build fewer tools for war and concentrate more on the tools for peace.
The insight and practices of the people responsible for these brilliant new ideas are serving as the best example possible for the leaders of the future...
Charleen, thanks for bringing this to our attention... lets keep more of this sort of really good exposure in the forefront...
The children are so beautiful..!

We really can just all get along!

Pray for palestine, pray for isreal, pray for china, pray for tibet, pray for iraq, pray for n. korea, pray for afganistan, pray for iran, pray for the u.s., pray for the sudan, pray for darfur and pray for everyone that's still lost in a lie called war.
Lost souls.
THIS is the future, THIS is what's possible.
The children can lead us there, if we only show them that's it's possible.
Turn off your TV and start a peace revolution!
Love your neighbor, this is the solution!
-
More diplomacy...Less War...
The Children have the spirit of Peace within them...-
