Living jacket made up of embryonic stem cells dies

A small jacket made up of embryonic stem cells taken from mice, had to be euthanized because it was growing too quickly for it's own support system. Why grow a jacket?... It was art and the director at the art show is feeling pretty guilty about her mercy killing.

Living jacket made up of embryonic stem cells dies

  • Woah. How weird. But I guess if I can kill a spider crawling through my living room, I could kill a jacket that got out of control. :)

  • What the hell? So this is what stem cell research is going towards?

  • yeah I agree with self-expression of many forms, but Im not sure about the point..

  • Makes you think, maybe they're "growing" something that could wear the jacket....

  • I wonder if this will inspire a Stephen King novel or a gore movie, "The Jacket".

  • Holy crap thats cool, and creepy. I prefer my clothes dead thank you very much, but I'm all for vat grown animal products (as long as they make the "recipes" publicly available).

  • there's a lot of really thought provoking & innovative pieces in the elastic mind exhibit.
i would love to see it in person before any of the other pieces get euthanatized or go into self-destruct mode!)

  • That is utterly amazing, and a great piece of art too! Kudos to the team for making living art out of stem cells, it definitely makes for a bold statement on their part.

  • Ive heard of killing for fashion but this is ridiculous! I wonder how the animal rights people are going to handle this?

  • Reminds us not to mix art with science. It doesn't work.

  • Think about the possibilities. . . I want one! Every time I bite the dust, I would be able to say. . .dont worry bro . . . I have spare skin at home . . I will slip out of the busted one into a fresh new skin! ; )

  • from human cells, it would have been much more comfortable...
We will be able to do that with cells of our girl friend or from cells of Mickeal Jackson.

    (fucking conservative people !)
  • Hey, if you'll "off" Michael Jackson even conservatives wouldn't mind you using his cells. That's 1 abortion we can all approve of.
  • If permitted to grow against the glass, I wonder what it might have become...?

  • I loved it. Wish I could have seen it in person.

  • You don't even wanna know what they made the turtleneck sweaters out of!

    (but seriously)

If Leatherface went on Project Runway, I think this jacket would be the result. Creepy.

  • embryonic stem cells wasted.
  • Oron Catts made a jacket out of mice? The irony is almost poetic.

  • that's far out!

  • I think the jacket would be a good use to some sort of like, skin regeneration? Maybe for people who got burns or something and needed some new skin to cover the wounds and such?
  • This a great, I wonder if the jacket felt pain as it was killed. How many mice are killed in this country every day and this woman has qualms about a silly mish mash of cells? It must have been a really cute jacket, imagine, a jacket that stays at the perfect body temperature. Can you imagine wearing it and then it moves. Prett soon some one woul try to have sex with the sleeve.
