To most people, grandparents are out of sight, out of mind. We see them a few times a year, they tend to tell us the same stories over and over again, and every time we go over to their house we're overwhelmed by stacks of dusty antiques and the scent of perfume that was outdated before we were born. Some might even have grandparents in a nursing home - most aren't visited at all.
But that's where Sam Parsons comes in. Sam's job is to visit the neglected, the dying, and the forgotten. Sam's employer? God. Sam says that God told him to visit these forgotten people and bring them hope. Each day Sam visits 3-5 nursing homes, convalescent homes and hospitals, walking in with a big grin and a guitar case. He roams the halls looking for people to cheer up, share a story with, or just listen to. He sings to everyone, prays with those who want it, and shares a sense of joy that is sorely lacking in todays health care system. Sam's job is to bring hope to people who might have forgotten it - not necessarily hope that they'll get better, although some do, but hope that they have heaven to look forward to. While many people might assume that most elderly are old Bible-thumping, hymn-singing saints, Sam knows better. He recognizes that while many were raised in Bible-believing homes, the weight of the world may have stripped them of their faith. Sam gently reminds them that this faith is what they have to hold onto as they face the last years of their life. Sam is a pastor, but not of a church - he's a pastor to a congregation of elderly that number in the thousands. He's not like the televangelists that some of the bedridden watch on their TV. No, Sam comes into their hospital room, pulls up a chair, plays a song, and chats with them about their life, their struggles, and their concerns.
In a world where we typically put our elderly on the back burner, Sam makes them the priority of his life. Whatever faith you follow, you'll be inspired by Sam's love for the forgotten...
