Court: No benefits for gay partners

The Michigan Supreme Court ruled, "public employers are barred from providing health care benefits to the partners of gay and lesbian employees."

The court ruling was based on an amendment approved by voters in 2004 banning same sex marriage. The 5-2 decision claimed the amendment also applied to employee benefits. At issue are the words "for any purpose" in the amendment. One can only wonder what other purposes the court can claim fall under the ban. Perhaps medical care? Hospital visitation rights? Inheritance rights? Adoption rights?

"Patrick Gillen, a professor at Ave Maria Law School ( http://www.avemarialaw.edu/ )and a coauthor of the amendment, said the court was correct to understand that same-sex benefit policies are an attempt to have "same-sex partners treated as spouses ... to redefine marriage and the family in a very radical way.

  • Ughhh, I hate these "family" groups.

How utterly offensive is it for some upper-middle class Christian-pretender dolt tell you what is and is not a family? Last time I checked, there's nothing in the bible that says what a family is or is not, they're just spreading their own hateful garbage.

And when did we decide that the only acceptable authority on morals was wacked out Christians?

Try and say it to my face "family" advocates, see what happens to you.

  • Seperation of church and state is a joke. I have yet to hear one gay couple ask or attempt to redefine marriage in the christian sense. Alls that they ask is that they are recognised as married and are given the same rights as any other married straight couple. They don't ask to be married in a church, they don't ask for people to even understand or agree, they just ask for respect and equality. Although this is a great topic, i also want to bring into account the rights of the whole gay community that until recently included transgender rights. I think that by fighting for rights you have to include the whole community that fought for awareness and equality. No one should be denied the right to life liberty and pursuit of happiness, especially here where were supposed to uphold this ideology. It will happen, it's just a matter of time.

  • i don't think it should not matter who you arfe in love with, but how well you do what ever you are doing, becasue a person who is gay can be way better than the person who is straight, but people lose that one person, because of who that person likes
  • It sounds to me like another example of our country's mentality. One step forward, two steps back.

  • I used to work at Target in Minneapolis, and they ask you if you are seriously committed to somebody in a long term relationship in order to see if you and your same sex partner would like those type of benefits. They are truly an honorable corporation in more ways than one.
