  • this is gonna sound cold, but, fuck 'em then. charities provide stipulations not recipients.

    sorry to all the Burmese.

  • They probably want the the supplies bar the aids because they want to unfairly distribute it unevenly.

  • CNN are reporting that US officials are contemplating food drops into Myanmar, even though they haven't been granted permission from the military government.

  • Kind of like the way the USA accepted food, supplies and money from the world after Katrina, but refused all foreign aid workers.

  • Hey guys, I'm having my birthday party on Saturday. Just leave your presents on the doorstep, but, please be respectful and don't try to say hi or come in to my house or anything.

Actually after typing that out it doesn't sound half bad, for birthdays anyway.

Seems they really don't want the help, the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok has gone on holiday today...

  • Do you really believe that our goal is to help the Myanmarian people? Don't be so gullible about our own government... and a interesting point Vierotchka made above.

  • The Burmase government's attempt to distribute bullets at high velocity to the local populance didn't go over well with the international community a while back so international aid is going to be a bit stymied over this one

  • I bet it will be revealed that Myanmar's junta led aid task force is run by FEMA.

  • It could be that they themselves want to distribute the supplies?

I could be wrong on this one.

  • Seemingly many aid shipments are waiting in neighboring countries, such as Tayland, to be delivered to Burma. The burmese military is asking aid organizations to pay fees, $1200/ton of aid for customs ("importing") and for $1/km/ton of aid, that has to be transported on military owned trucks. Moreover, they are also asking for $1800/aid worker in visa fees, this is the fee for a 7 day visa. All machines and equipment have to be donated to the military after it is used for help, and the timepoint will be determined by the military reps.

So it's business they want not help....

  • Well I didn't know about that.

    That's pretty immoral.

  • the junta's stubborn ignorance is imminently shocking. While their own people suffer the politicization of daily life overshadows said suffering. The United States and other industrial powers must provide as much aid as possible!!

  • they want our money but don't want us to see the unhumane conditions the people are living in

  • There's a difference between the US and foriegn workers during Katrina because the US like most 1st World countries has rescue operations galore (just in that case it was poorly led and the geographic location made for difficulty). The US didn't need any foriegn aid workers (ie extra people cluttering up the place)- why this comparison was even thrown out is a mystery to me.

But with Burma, they don't have the adequate facilities to distribute supplies or organize relief efforts as much of their budget is geared towards the military to keep the government in power.

Plus given their appalling response some months ago towards demonstrators, it's only natural international relief organizations don't trust them farther than they can throw them in handling the situation on their own.

  • The Burmese junta isn't going to give the relief to the people of Burma, its going to keep it for themselves!
Hopefully there's a peacful way the Burmese people can obtain aid and freedom, but so far it doesn't seem that way.

  • It's obvious that the ruling junta in Burma is limiting foreigners' acess to their country in order to conceal just how backward, poor, and destitute they have kept the country and its people due to their inept and corrupt handling. The military officers have renamed the country in order to try and take it from the people-ask just about any person from there if they refer to the country as Burma or Myanmar and you will see this name change is a contrivance of the power hungry fascists in control-and they continue to refuse to accept the mandate of the people through their popular vote for Aung San Suu Kyi and democracy. These people currently in power are very much like Kim Jong's dynasty in Korea, and it is my frim belief that they too are hiding the fact that they are starving their own people in order to fatten their wallets and bank accounts.
When I visited Thailand and went to the refugee villages on the Thai-Burmese border, I was told not to go to certain villages on a specific day because they anticipated raids by the Burmese military. It seems the army makes forays across the porous border in the jungle-covered hills and mountains there in order to abduct the men in the refugee camps, take them back across the border, and put them in work camps and gangs. It's no secret that the junta is engaging in cultural genocide of all the hill tribes and attempting to eliminate their traditions and cultural ties in order to reduce them into a cheap and unorganized work force for the erection of the monstrous concrete monuments to the generals that sit in hulking silence at the various border crossings.
While I am not in favour of invading the country in order to force compliance with international relief efforts, something must be done in order to make the generals allow whatever aid needs to be given. The time for planting next season's rice crop is fading fast, and if action isn't taken to clean up the rice paddies and feed and shelter the farmers, there will be mass starvation and the death toll will rise even higher.
