As it was featured on Current_News on Current TV
In the 1990s 2 million North Koreans died of starvation. The present situation may dwarf those numbers as 6.5 million people face food shortages and starvation. North Korea is actively engaged in talks with the United States which may result in food aid. South Korea halted aid as it is waiting for North Korea to ask for it. South Korea has a new conservative government that is critical of North Korea, so the poor are suffering as governments hash out their ego contest.
In the past, North Koreans who escaped to China or South Korea reported cannibalism during particularly difficult food shortages.

We HAVE to help North Korea. Just because we don't like their government doesn't mean that we have to let the population of the country starve to death. Unfortunately this probably won't be covered as much as it should with the equally sad story out of Burma. Uroborus8 Thanks for uploading this.

This might be a dumb question, but how can we just drop food onto a country? How does that work? If the talks fail and the North Korean government won't allow aid, then what do we do? Can we drop food on them? If we do, who do we know the people are getting it?

I'm not saying drop food on the country, but we need to find a way to get permission from the North Korean government to get food to those who need it in North Korea. North Korea doesn't have one of our governments favorite leaders, but that shouldn't get in the way of getting the people of North Korea food.
-
i agree we should help the people of North Korea, but there are starving people and no one seems to care. everyone's always worried about other countries and they don't realize that poverty is an epidemic here too. i think Americans should stop worrying about other countries for a while and focus on the problem here. if you don't already know this by now i guess i'll enlighten you: The Almighty Dollar is Dead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
its the UN's job, not ours.
-
We should help starving people everywhere! This is not a government issue, or a UN issue, it's a humanitarian issue! The sooner that people stop saying "Its not our problem" the sooner we reach a better earth for our children. I don't think either one of you are actually giving food to anyone, so maybe since you are against helping those who need it out of our country, you should go down to your local oneof ten Mcdonalds and give the crack head on the corner a cheesburger made from our mass produced animal slavery...America's problem is itself, and the people here who live in their perfect worlds talking about what people should do or not do. When what we should be figuring out how to take the TONS of food that restaurants throw out everyday, or the tons of food you or I waste every day....and give it to OUR homeless, in the meantime while every other country in the world hates America we can send over the rations that most of us wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. Extend your arms. If you truly want the American dream then live up to it and help anyone in front of you that needs it, I expect my government to do the same.
-
I agree that we ought to help starving people anywhere. Nevertheless, it is their governments and policies that are to blame for lack of interest in their citizens.
For instance, I have seen pics of Kim Jong Il of North Korea, or Omar al-bashir of Sudan.....these folks are chubby yet the people they claim to lead suffer unfathomable hunger.
As far as North America, (US and Canada), food is not a problem because the continent has embraced science (GM foods), promoted by government policies.
North America did not create hunger in these regions, and if food end up in trash, so be it. People in North America do not wait for "manna" to drop from heaven, they work for it, advocate for, and hold government officials in account. -
This is so hearbreaking. I've seen a photo of a vulture standing near a child who was near death from starvation.
-
sad ish kids dying of hunger for Christ sakes and to think of all the money that gets wasted on our hypocrite laws, wars, and other fascist rich phuks views that dont help anyone but themselves
-
Their government might be insane, but you know what the people living there are still human.
-
Yeah!!! Waste food that's cool! just because we don't get hand outs gimme a break, and I didn't say that America caused their problems I just said we should help anyone who needs it.
-
the problem is not aid its the north korean goverment or more so kim jong-il's willingness to let the un in and help them. he has repeatedly broken disarmarment treatys and sanctions set by the un. he basically would rather keep his military power than feed his people. hard to help a country whos leaders don't want help. look for myanmar for an example.
-
im sorry but i dont know why the shortages in North Korea? I mean i get govtn policies but which ones?
-
that's sad. that's horrible. i want to help.
but explain to me again why we HAVE to "help" anybody?-

You know innocent that's a good point. Why do we have to help? In a way, if a nation can't farm its land carefully enough to feed it's own population, and we ravage our own soils with industrial practices in order to create a huge surplus of food at the expense of future generations' ability to farm that land, then we turn around and give that food to people who can't sustain themselves, aren't we perpetuating a negative spiral toward global over-population and ecological disaster?
I'm not entirely sure where I stand on this myself, I just can't help but think about it. I consider myself a humanitarian ("I'd rather shoot a human than a snake"-Edward Abbey), but really, I want to help these people too. But are we helping ourselves to death?
-
We are and will be helping for a long time in one way or another.
We are not the only country that can help. -
why cant we teach them how to farm? oh because we are too busy spending billions of dollars in war. if we just had extra billions of dollars lying around why not help the starving people of the world.
-
i think that the korea gov are a nasty BUT the people DONT deserve starving to death
-
it's unbelievably sad to see that free food to feed a starving population has such heavy political strings attached. it does well to remind us what is good about our country.
-
You can't help everyone. People have to start helping themselves. The people of North Korea need to rise up and throw out their leader. The leaders in this world are realling failing to rule properly, we have Robert Mugabe destroying a country, we have George Bush bringing about useless war, we have the Junta in Burma refusing to let their people receive aid without propaganda, the list goes on and on.

just air strike kim jong il out of power , and assassinate whatever officials stand in the way - this is not called "war" , this is , actually , a form of humanitarian relief - and if killing a few hundred evil bastards sounds horrible , how about letting millions die miserably because a few hundred didn't care to help . i can't think of any better reason to destroy a regime than to feed a country - imagine a N. Korean military fighting to insure that their country starves . i dream of a day when int'l crises can be solved like this , when required , and that the UN would endorse it .
-
diode, it's not the UN's job. If everyone took that stance, nothing would ever be accomplished.

-
i think this is a horrible picture this poor starving chid. i wish that america would do more to help the other people in thoes countries. i mean sure once and a while a celebrity adopts and one maybe two kids get lucky but there has got to be some reolution to this world wide problem.

do they know their people are starving?
-
we have people starving in America, i agree its not our responsibility thats the UN's. We have a responsibility to the millions of americans living in bad conditions. Not some person who hates you 10k miles away.

In this documentary, "Welcome to North Korea", it shows a lot of things that go on there.
People are starving so much in NK that they result in eating tree bark, and more depressing...the deceased.
Of course we should help North Korea, and so should the rest of the world...but if a leader is going to starve his nation, why the hell would he let the US help them out?
What's even more sad is that when North Koreans hop the border and go to China, many Chinese will either kill them on the spot or send them back to the North Korean government...and when that happens, we never hear about the aftermath.
Starvation has been occurring within NK for some time now, the reason many people aren't aware of this is because North Korea doesn't disclose ANYTHING to the rest of the world.
In 2007, there was an "estimate" of how many people they might have, and that number totaled out to be over 27 million people. For all we know, there could be 30 million people starving in that country, and we wouldn't know it.-

this breaks my heart.

It is absurd that we can sit here and allow other humans to suffer like this. A million excuses why we can't or shouldn't help is no justification for allowing this to happen. Why do we have to help? Because it is our moral DUTY to lend a hand when ever and wherever we can. That anyone can question whether or not this is "our business/job" is an indication that there is a significant problem with the moral compass among our people. That is as equally disturbing as this story.
-
I look at this and think to myself, "How can this even be real?" Here I sit in my soft chair in front of a screen filled with light and words and pictures that all suggest to me that there is a famine somewhere, somehow, on this floating ball of dirt and ocean.
Just don't let them starve, it doesn't have to be.
But that's probably too much to ask, give it another month and "we'll" all be back in our chairs commenting about how millions of North Koreans are dieing every day from famine.
-
i didn't read all the commentary because its like 2 in the morning, so this could have been mentioned. but to be honest the way i see it, if were dealing with people, that were like the Japanese towards us, or are apparently much like Africa, then there's nothing we can do. First, Japan used to be so against us, that if anyone succumbed to America's military, they were either killed by their own, or committed suicide. In some African tribes, as i heard (underline), many tribal leaders refuse to give out food when we do give it. so i mean if they wont take it, there's no reason to give it. If the UN can kinda, pull up their army, go in, put in a nice government, im sure we can help.
But on a more separate note, im not trying to be an ass or anything, i mean i truly feel bad for these people, especially the kids. like im ticked off that my phone wont work right (pocket pc, like 200$) when these people don't have a penny to spend on food. but, population control. that's the only way to put it. life is vicious, and there's a food chain, with people being at the top, theirs a also a system in there.
hence in times like this, im pretty sure some ppl can forget about their own money, and at least get a good feeling that they helped a good cause.
-especially forget about pride; what kind of governemnt could let their people die and refuse help, on such childish... reasons. -
the famine is especially scary this time around, because of the global food shortages that will compound its own inability to feed its people
