It's exactly the same as in a thunderstorm. Friction between dust particles hitting each other causes a separation of charge. When the charges reconnect you get lightning.

Im a 3d artist and if that isnt doctored, and the real thing, its the most phenomenal image ive seen to date!

The earth and weather has changed so drastically in just my 47 yrs here on Earth i have witnessed lightning going upwards (grd to clouds) in florida, wish i had a special night camera to capture it, its the strangest thing to see, actually i thought it was impossible. Ive even witnessed tornadoes and lightning like heavenly gods fighting a war with lightning rather than swords, light of red and blues crashing into itself. Its only going to get worst in the future, theirs no reversal in what man has already created.

Since we're all weighing in on these pictures, I couldn't help but say that I am blown away and excited about the images. They are really cool and I am going to send them to my friends.

Sweet.... I love all the people talking so animistically, Mother Nature and all, but man this is a totally natural thing going on that's been shaping this earth for millions of years before we were around and it will continue to happen long after we're gone until the sun reaches the end of its life, implodes or super novas or whatnot, and takes the 1st couple planets in our solar system with it...

i think that the photographer let his exposure time run for a while. We may actually be seeing the amount of lightning that struck over the course of 5 minutes. It is truly incredible. A few weeks ago i made a list of places i want to visit and experience. Chile was on it, and also myanmar. how ironic is it that they were both devastated bynatural disasters in the past few weeks.
