I went to Yangon, the main city in Burma, and discovered a thriving hip hop scene. I talked to musicians, found hip hop in a small village outside of town, and went to a big open air hip hop concert. In a country where censorship is a normal part of life, musicians struggle to make the music they want to make, and two rappers have already been jailed this year. Nevertheless, they keep recording and performing. This is a look at hip hop in Burma, and a window onto the kinds of lives that young people there are living.

  • I watched this whole pod thinking, wow, music finds it's way into everything, no matter how hard you try to keep it out, it'll find a crevice and expose itself, infecting anyone who simply dares to listen. And all this times it was because of Fruity Loops. Go figure.

    Where words fail, music speaks.

  • The Ghetto is just the "ghetto" here in America, but the culture of the "Black Ghetto in America", has always and will always have influence on the entire world. Hip Hop was born in the ghettos of New York city, while civil rights activice like,Stokley Carmichael and H."Rap" Brown,(aka Jameel Alimin), are the true Architects of "rap".Before the recording industry destroyed this cultural music,by creating money magnets like,"Eminem",rap had a purpose.Racist America could never accept the Black faces on the walls of their own White children,so they did what they did with Jesus,Pat Boone,Elvis Presley, and now Eminem. They stole the legacy. They why artist like,Nas and Andre 3000,say that Hip Hop is DEAD.
Hip Hop is the "Voice of Change".Always has been, and it always will be.,and if you haven't notice,"...........I'm just spittin' on the mic' right now.Rap don't need no music.Rap makes it's own music, like the ancestors did on the cargo ships, like they did in the fields, like they did during the protest march, and like they're during behind the walls of Americas racist pentitentiary walls today. So today,I praise these young people in Burma and people of all nations that have the courage to speak out against tyranny and oppression, and because it is Mothers Day,allow me please to take time now to wish "Happy Mothers Day" to all of those suffering voices that were never heard, but always felt, because they are the true mothers of "Hip Hop.

  • A fine, fine pod.
It amazes me how the difference between buying a car and buying a ring in the lyrics could get a song banned in Burma. It flat out floored me to hear obviously political lyrics being spouted out at the big show without gunfire or other violence to stop it. Was the fear of rioting a factor? A serious lack of electrical power won't stop these courageous people from doing what they love and getting themselves heard. Very motivating.

  • Wow that was so sad at the end him asking for electricity! It's a testament to the inadequacy of the Burmese government that art is hindered by something so basic...

  • Its fascinating and inspiring to see these young people in Burma making hip-hop, all thanks to just Fruity Loops and that little bit of electricity that they have.

It reminds me of music in Soviet Eastern European satellite states (Poland, Czechoslovakia, etc.). The regime was oppressive and censored lyrics; however, the music of the "West" made its way even to these countries. Teenagers and young people were able to listen to the melodies from Elvis Presley or The Beatles songs covered in their mother tongue.

  • Hip-Hop is bigger than the governments!!!

  • Those Burmese rappers had some powerful lyrics!

I wish more rappers in America would adhere to poetic writing in their songs instead of boasting and degrading.
