This only goes to show you that where there is a demand, suppliers will emerge. The only true fix to this problem is to legalize everything. We have spent over $500 billion on the "war on drugs" over the last 20 years and the only thing that has changed is the drugs are twice as potent and more violence is connected with their distribution. The rise in violence is only due to a reaction against the levels of violence we have used in trying to eliminate trafficking. If we legalize it, we can tax it. If we legalize it, we can regulate it and drugs will be safer for users to consume. If we legalize it, the number of mandatory minimums for drug-related crimes will plummet and our current prison crisis will be nonexistent. If we legalize it, drug use will (in the long run) go down (as it has in the Netherlands).

I definately agree with photosynthetics. It is time to make sense and be honest. We all know its not working we all know violence stems from ILLEGAL drug trade. I mean when are we all going to admit it?!
And I know some of you will say that friends or family have become addicted or died from drug abuse. Well guess what people die every day from alchoholism, cigarretes and prescription overdoses (all of which are legal) With all that money spent on the war on drugs we could finance the school system to teach adolescents the risks of drugs alchohol tobacco and STD's. When are we going to stop the hypocrism in this country. -
This pod is very biased, it seems to only say how drugs are bad and these people deserved it.
What about some other perspectives?
Or even looking into how they we're monitored for about 6 months by undercover officials posing as their friends. -
They certainly collected an impressive supply; kudos to that. Texting, man, bad idea, bad idea.

Dealing on campus and networking there isn't very wise. Trafficking through means of text messaging?? Bad Idea...

I agree with photosynthetics... I'm all for the de-regulation of "illegal" drugs. It's time that we started started viewing drugs a a medical problem, not a criminal one.
-
It saddens me to see these students take such a hardline stance against the people arrested for this. There is a possibilty not all 96 people arrested were involved in the illegal activities. People don't even know the reasoning behind the drug ring. Perhaps they were just using the funds to pay tutition to put themselves through college? I assure you, I am not making excuses for them but simply giving an opinion that is not as cut and dry as the one's heard from the actual campus.
The war on drugs is fundamentally flawed. It focuses on crime and punishment instead of wellness and rehabilitation. I suppose there is no money in healing the addicted. As long as the prisons continue to fill up with drug offenders, owners of the prison industry will continue to profit from it.
I feel sorry for these kids, now they won't have a decent chance a getting a good career...-

Couldn't have said it better myself both of you. I have friends in the Netherlands and they laugh of Americans get excited over the legal pot there. Making it Taboo is what makes it so appealing to the naive. -
I don't think the reasoning that's been used so far is ever going to really justify the use of drugs to people who are at war against them; reiterating that it happens everywhere will only intensify drug busting measures, not lessen them. And yes, alcohol and cigarettes are addicting and are responsible for so many deaths, but a line has been drawn which won't be crossed by those trying to crack down on drugs. In such emotionally weighted issues like this one (and one which has already had so much money put into it) it's going to be very hard to change any opinions where so many people are ideologically engaged in a crusade against it.

this pod was completely one-sided. This whole fiasco at san diego state came about because two people died of cocaine overdoses where the people left them to die because they were scared to call for help because they would possibly get in trouble. Yes drug dealing is illegal and im not condoning the actions of those arrested, but had San Diego State had a Good Samaritan policy at the time of the original deaths, two people could have alive, and 76 students could still be in class getting the education that they will now be denied having and put them in prison where they will just meet other criminals and possibly turn some of them into career criminals, instead of them graduating and moving past their drug dealing days. You will never eradicate drugs in this country or world-wide so we need to start changing our policies now so that incidents like this will not be major news headlines.
The president of San Diego State's Student for Sensible Drug Policy said in the aftermath of this whole incident one of the best phrases I have heard in a long time about the war on drugs and that is " You can beat an addiction, but you cant beat a conviction."
On a personal note, them seizing and ultimately destroying 48 marijuana plants is just heart-wrenching in my mind. Growing good marijuana is a difficult yet very rewarding process that I enjoy and knowing that, it just brings a tear to my eye.-
