The Power to Recommend
Some of you may have leveled up and noticed that you’ve attained a newfound ability on Current—the power to recommend.

But, we noticed that there’s been some confusion about what ‘recommending’ is and how it’s intended to be used, so we want to let you know what’s going on.

We all see a lot of great stuff on Current—but sometimes you see something so great, so insightful, that you just want to give it that extra push. That’s the time to recommend something. Recommending isn’t a way to say “I agree,” it’s a way to highlight the best of the best—the thing that, if someone could only look at one thing on Current that day, you would tell them to read.

Think of recommendations as the Oscars of Current.com. Sure, you might get sucked into watching Dirty Dancing every time it’s on, but it’s not Gone with the Wind. Save your recommendations for the Gone with the Wind comments—otherwise, they won’t mean as much.

Do you like the ability to recommend? Do you agree that it should be reserved to highlight the very best on Current.com? Let us know what you think in a comment below.

Best,
Steph

  • I was never granted the almighty power to recommend...so I'm not really sure why I was sent this. If you'd like to give me this power I would gladly accept. As for the recommendations in general, they don't really mean anything to me. What do I care what 'nycutie6789' thinks is insightful or important? I can read for myself. But maybe I'm not totally clear about what it's all about.

  • I've always felt the ability to give a simple thumbs up/down for comments would be useful. It gives people a super-quick way to contribute and can easily identify popular commenters and trolls. I like SFGate's interface for this (see attached image). For something a little fancier, DailyKos has an up/down count that the user can expand to see how members voted.

  • Whats great is to know MY voice DOES matter. In a world that trampples of the normal everyday person, the small glimmer of hope that carries YOU thru each day to day existence can be asked sometimes....ANYTIME mind you!,about questions which gives you faith in humankind once more. Answers that say you are trully important and not just another barcode number in the grocery isle of life.

  • If the time ever comes that I'm allowed to recommend other's posts I will try, the best I can, to not go nuts with it as an ego rush. Just because I might agree with a post doesn't mean that it's a "trophy winner". Thanks for the heads-up on how it's supposed to be utilized.

  • Thanks for the heads up. I'm not there yet but I look forward to the opportunity of handing out my Current.com Oscars. I probably would have went with "Citizen Kane" over "Gone With the Wind" though. LOL

  • I would've tied "CK" with "The Wizard Of Oz".
1939 was an amazing year in film.
    Off topic, I know. Still...

  • I still don’t understand how kudo’s work so I’ll get to that in due time.

  • Thanks for the info. Now I feel even more honored that I got "recommended" yesterday!

  • Why does it take so many days of doing something to reach "recommend" status? Isn't there some way to accomplish the same based on quality of uploads? There is a difference between someone who has journalism credentials and/or is going out and gathering info for a post here and someone who just posts a YouTube link. This same investigative person may not have the time to hang out on Current all day, every day (ah-HEM...like me).

  • What do you have to do to get the recomend button?
Is it a certain number of contributions or comments?

  • Thanks for explaining how the recommend function is intended to identify exceptional contributions and comments.

  • I am wondering on HOW we get that power to recommend as well...please explain, thanks!

  • I just leveled up to level 2 commentator, and have no idea what that means.... does it mean anything different happens??

I think you have to be at level 3 before you can recommend, but I have no idea how many kudos you need to get to level 3. Is there a place that explains that whole thing??

  • I think the "recommend" is useful, particularly if it is tied in with someone's profile. That way you can get a much clearer idea of where their inclinations lie by looking at them. They might vote up something that they think is funny, but it lacks any real seriousness to do so. I do like the change to "vote up " versus the old button with "I like it" on it-- might make it easier for stories about genocide and other tough topics to work their way up. I agree with the comment that just like stories have a "vote up" versus "vote down" button, comments should have the same exact thing. That way good comments can stay above the fold (or the scroll) and the trite ones full of swears and incoherent babbling can get stuffed to the bottom.

  • More reasons to level up, okay, I am with it.
