The aviation industry's failure to curb its soaring carbon emissions could lead to the "worst case scenario" for climate change, as envisaged by the United Nations.

An unpublished study by the world's leading experts has revealed that airlines are pumping 20 per cent more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than estimates suggest, with total emissions set to reach between 1.2 billion and 1.5 billion tonnes annually by 2025.
The report, by four government-funded research bodies, is one of the most authoritative estimates of the growth of pollutants produced by the industry. It was presented to a conference. Combining data produced by the leading emissions-modelling laboratories in the US, Britain and France, the study found that the number of people seriously affected by aircraft noise will rise from 24 million in 2000 to 30.3 million by 2025, despite the introduction of quieter jets, and that the amount of nitrogen oxides around airports, produced by aircraft engines, will rise from 2.5 million tonnes in 2000 to 6.1 million tonnes in 2025.

  • that SUCKS.

I've done a lot of flying in my life. I feel guilty, but not half as much as I would if I flew NOW, knowing what I know.

how to reconcile? My parents live across the country. I like to travel the world. How can we travel the world without contributing to global warming?

I wanted to see the ice caps before they were gone. Maybe I should walk.
  • Well nowadays flying is really the only way to travel.
  • Planes hold a lot of people. You gotta think... how much pollution is emitted per person on a plane compared to a car?

  • i have seen contrails from airplanes turn into clouds and then the rain came...i always am scared to get caught in those raindrops because of the chemicals...

  • If technology has been able to make car engines so much cleaner...can't the smart scientists and designers figure out a way to do the same for planes?

I personally love taking trains...but at least in the US, given the fact that shipping trains get right of way over passenger trains (Amtrak is government run, the private shipping companies pay for upkeep of the tracks, therefore have "rights" to the tracks over Amtrak)...the passenger trains are never on time, and therefore often not a viable source of transportation for anyone who cares when they arrive at their destination! Get some high speed trains going in the US, and give right of way to Amtrak (the can of tomatoes isn't gonna care if it's an hour late, whereas passengers do), and that could help! Any other ideas?

  • I like the sentiment of the article, but you really gotta wonder about the accuracy of projecting trends out to the year 2025.

Breathing, or exhaling produces greenhouse gases, so we all need to hold our breath more and stop excersizing, having sex and breathing hard.

  • New figures show that people in the UK are good at recycling and making use of public transport, but not so good at giving up cars and air travel, which has risen "substantially" over the last four years. It seems we're reluctant to give up anything that means less fun.

They also show that we need governments to step in and do the groundwork for us: "car use has increased overall, but it has decreased in London, by 2%, and in the east Midlands, by 7%. Both these drops in use were accompanied by an increase in the use of public transport, by 23% in London and 29% in the east Midlands".

Greenpeace campaigner Anna Jones said: "It's no surprise that the number of flights taking off from UK airports is going up when we're led by a government that has done more than any other to promote a binge-flying culture. Ministers are backing new airports and new runways when they should be making trains cheaper and more accessible." Word.
  • I agree with kingston916...THAT looks like chemtrails to me too! Anyone heard of chemtrails???

Not really sure what your talking about here. I will tell you one thing though. The fact that you believe that the auto industry has made any effort to make greener cars, proves there ad campain is working. The auto industry has in fact takin vast measures against the raising of emmision standards. It's a marketing ploy to fool americans into thinking anything is being done about the auto industrys massive contribution to global warming. The name decribing whats been fooling the american public is called greenwashing. These big companies spend millions on advertising that sends the message something is being done about there gas guzzling beasts. While behind the scenes doing everything they can to stop or slow down leglisation that would raise emmision standards. We need to see past this lie. We are nothing but money to these companies. Do not partake in the steady distruction of earth. Fight the companys that seek to undermine the efforts to decreas global warming.

  • how am i supposed to be a "green" pilot??

  • I live under an air corrider connecting Boston, MA & Manchester, NH where the chemtrails and/or contrails linger for hours, eventually forming these unnatural clouds and contaminating the atmosphere & the air we breathe with who knows what. Just within the last few years I've paid more attention to these changing patterns & am very concerned our gov't is yet again up to no good, putting its innocent citizens' health at risk. Has anybody else noticed these conditions when looking skyward & what do you think?

  • Dear darkhorsejim...keep paying attention to those chemtrails and how you feel physically. They are highly toxic. This has been on the local news here in California where they have actually taken samples of the air within hours and days after the chemtrails and have found high levels of heavy metals, etc. This is very real!

Here is another video on chemtrails with more info if your interested. ;)

I read an interview with a Doctor that almost died from toxins in the chemtrails. In short, she suggests daily detoxing the liver because that is the main eliminating organ that can become poisoned and cause severe toxitity, even death. She suggests Milk Thistle for the liver and Coloidal Silver to clear out Bacteria that causes upper respiratory problems that are also found in chemtrails. Hope this is enough info for you.

P.S. there are also numerous video clips from the news on myspace on chemtrails. (just look up chemtrails)

    Blessings!
  • P.S. this is not the airlines fault. Research...there is no such jet stream from regular airlines or even jets. This is a Govt. coverup story trying to blame it on the airlines! Practice looking in the direction your told to look away from. You will always find truth.

    Blessings to all!
