Torture Team: Deception, Cruelty and the Compromise of Law
by Philippe Sands
Allen Lane £20, pp336
Only a psychopath inflicts systematic brutality on another man in cold blood; a psychopath or a soldier obeying orders. Many of the military interrogators based at the US detention camp at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, in late 2002 were young, barely out of their teens. They were led to believe that what they were doing was not only legal, but patriotic. They tortured and thought it was virtuous."

  • The Guardian also recently had an amazing exposé on the person who took the infamous Abu Ghraib photos (check the link for the full article). It reveals the sad truth that she was eventually punished for trying to document the murky circumstances of her everyday working life - and why those who killed "Gilligan" were never even named, let alone punished for their crime.

"The CIA men refused to take their destroyed prisoner with them when they left, and nobody knew how to handle the corpse of someone who had been officially nonexistent when he was alive. What do you call a dead ghost? Nobody even knew his name.

When Colonel Thomas Pappas, the overall commander of the prison showed up, he said, "I'm not going down alone for this." Pappas was an MI man and it wasn't clear if he was threatening anybody in particular, but nothing more needed to be said to ensure that the collective interest in deniability was keenly felt. So medics were called in to clean the dead man up, bandage his open wounds, and pack him in ice in a body bag. Then the shower was scrubbed down with bleach, the body bag was zipped shut and placed in a corner, the room was locked, and a note was made in the cell block log: "1B shower not to be used until OGA is moved out." • Way to lead by example. Good ol' Donald Rumsfeld. Have you seen Amnesty International's Unsubscribe-Me campaign against torture in the "War on Terror"? Here's one of the three advertisements they're using.

  • They may get away with what they have done because of presidential pardon. The world court is not going to let this go away. That is the hope that I have. I don't believe in torture but I would love to see it done to any of them.
  • This book is all the more poignant if you consider that these bastards may have orchestrated the 9/11 attacks, or at the very least were complicit when they had the Intelligence warning them that attacks on the World Trade Center were imminent. Condi admitted that to Congress, but she said "no one would have ever dreamed that something so terrible could really happen."

  • How I possibly call myself patriotic with this hanging all over it?

  • Jubal, I don't think they actually planned the attack. I do believe they let it happen. Watch GW's face in Michael Moore's movie while he is sitting in that class room. If that isn't the face of a man waiting for the rest to happen, I don't know what is. Huntre, of course you are patriotic we just have to take it back, clean it up and never let it happen again.
  • I don't think they actually planned the attacks either, but I do believe they looked the other way when they knew it was going to happen.
