A very intriguing take on the current crisis in Myanmar.
The cyclone that recently hit has caused an immeasurable amount of damage and suffering, yet little has been done by the government to help it's people.

No, no it's not time to invade Burma. The way the Times presents starting a war with the Myanmar government in an almost casual way is sickening.
These people need food, medicine and shelter, not people fighting over who and when and how it gets their. -
We don't have to invade a country to help it's population. Look at what is happening in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Maybe they are correct... I think we may be afraid of using our military in light of the last 8 years... and we should be very careful about using it in any confrontational matter; but at the same time I think its important as a major power and a formidable force to stand up against the injustices in this world.
Do I think that US forces should be in the Sudan? Yes. Would I support US forces being used to intimidate the Junta? Yes.
Unfortunately, the only reason we don't do anything about these massive tragedies is because China has vested interests in both and won't let us...
I think there may be postive purposes and uses of a well armed army. It's who's in control that presents the problems... -
I just noticed the play of words... if they're gonna be so damn clever with their language, I say yes.. go ahead.
-
why wouldn't UN "peace-keeping " forces be sent in now , instead of cleaning up after a US led invasion ? it seems to me that "peace" shouldn't have to wait on "war" - it should prevent war . Burma should be occupied now - war shouldn't even have to happen - and the US shouldn't have to bear the burden of any operations in Burma to begin with . ( this is an old argument )

I never thought it was time for anyone to invade anywhere, but heck, that's just me.

A****les
how is a respected publication going to have that as a topic? its sad. -
The headline is more inflammatory than the story. They do offer a couple alternatives and talk with a some high ranking officials.
-
Oh yes of course. The obvious solution to a people being oppressed by a military dictator is to fly in your own oppressive military dictator. Yes, that is a wonderful idea.
-
if they want to pull a new orleans, fine by me.
-
Has anyone seen any stories on how the Mon and Karen rebels are dealing with the aftermath of the cyclone?
-
why not, what could go wrong, bush is in charge.
-
Sure, why not, we've invaded everywhere else.

The Bush Administration has so far rejected the idea — "I can't imagine us going in without the permission of the Myanmar government," Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Thursday
OH MY FUCKLING GORD! What the fuck. . . No, we can't go into a country without the governments permission! Are you nuts?-

nah, doesn't look like they have enough oil to be worth our time...
-
So now everyone wants the US to be the World Police again?
-
Well dgold0101 someone has to help those people. I mean we shouldnt invade in an offensive manner, but we should of course send personal aid.

I agree completely, it's just interesting to see people use the same argument they vehemently used against the invasion of Iraq in the exact opposite manner her. Now, I opposed the invasion and support helping Burma, but one can't help but point out the hypocrisy.
-
Raise your hand if you actually read the linked editorial...okay, one or two people did...
By "invasion" the writer simply means making food and aid drops into Burma without the permission of the government. This would technically be an invasion, since our planes would be flying into sovereign airspace. But this is not about marching in and overthrowing the government. This is about trying to prevent hundreds of thousands of deaths. -
Yeah, too bad the current regime keeps about 90% of the aid.
-
Yes, I think it is time to invade Burma before this corrupted military government continues to pressure over its own people. Do it now before it is too late.
-
Yes, let's start before it is too late.
