Constance Penley - Professor
Eon McKai, Kimberly Kane visit a University Class to speak.
Description:
2hr presentation chopped down to 17 min. and only 2-3 min. will be used for final pod. Let me know what clips are considerably controversial or interesting information to include in final pod. Still looking to film more comments about the curriculum. Also needing to film interviews with a couple students who are enrolled in the class. I have a couple who are interested.
I know it is long, but there was a variety of important sound bits. Interviews are at the end. The audio changes here and there, you might need to turn up the volume to hear it all. (one shotgun mic near where Constance sits up front row)

Good first draft btw keep it up.

Music would be great, maybe a voice over in the beginning to explain what's going on.
I don't really know WHY there is a class on porn?
Ask yourself, what do you wanna say in your film? I guess that's what's missing....

When I was teaching high school a few years ago, most guys openly discussed their desire to be a porn star. I'm sure that's still the case. I like the guy saying this class was the reason he went to UCSB. When we actually talked openly about sex and porn in the classroom it became less of an obsession. When you ask questions and try to answer them, you get more clear about a subject. I think it's great that porn as a film genre is being taught in colleges. Where do I sign up?

This is by no means a first draft or a pod in any way or form, just clips from a two hour shoot. What is worth keeping, should I continue to make this film? Anyone interested? What are your thoughts?

The speaker talked about 'the female voice' becoming louder in the business, the art aspect, and how he looks to the models to have input was interesting to me. That is something your finished pod should explore.
Another point is when he said 'if you are a film student.. into lighting, camera.. porn is for you.' That also should be explored in your finished work.

I went to UCSB and this is certainly a class I would have attended, what with Soc. 152 and the Sexual Politics class that I dug so much. I certainly would like to see more of this.
Been a fan of McKai's since Art School Sluts. There's certainly an aesthetic that he's exploring. I like some but not all of the Vivid Alt films, but I haven't seen Kimberly Kane's films.
The thought that inspired me to comment is that bit at the end where the professor brings up Boogie Nights, a film I have enjoyed quite a bit. She mentions that Nina Hartley's character is punished for enjoying sex. I would disagree with that in the whole. I think that she and her husband are destroyed not because she enjoyed sex, but because she so completely destroyed him through disrespect of his psyche. In the film she showed absolutely no compassion for the person with whom she had made a major commitment.
Obviously the film revolves around the self-destructive behaviors in the porn industry. I don't believe that porn in-and-of-itself is self destructive, but I can see that the outlaw nature of the industry and the big money it generates could draw some very damaged hearts.
For a different viewpoint on sex in film, I'd highly recommend Tony Comstock's work: http://www.comstockfilms.com/main.html

Porn is the elephant in the room. It is a topic worth exploring.
The "alt" conversation is intriguing - exploring the smile on the map of the US might be cool.
Censorship and free speech permeates any thought around porn, and is well worth exploring.
thanks for sharing
