Half in Ten plans to reduce poverty in the United States by 50 percent within 10 years.
Under the leadership of Senator John Edwards, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) http://www.acorn.org ), the Center for American Progress Action Fund (CAPAF) http://www.americanprogressaction.org ), the Coalition on Human Needs (CHN) http://www.democracyinaction.org/chn ), and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR) http://www.civilrights.org ), have joined forces on the campaign to:
Elevate and sustain a focus on the situations facing the poor and middle class today
Build and strengthen an effective constituency to demand legislative action on poverty and economic mobility
Advance specific legislative and policy proposals that will deliver real benefits to struggling American families

A noble cause that I fully support but I think the proposal is overlooking major economic fundamentals. The single biggest act that we could take to help ensure prosperity for Americans is to have a more transparent Federal Reserve whose only function would be to maintain a strong currency or to simply abolish it altogether. I fear that the failure of our school system to promote fiduciary responsibility and teach basic economics is about to make itself felt in a very painful way.
A nice primer on the sometimes dreary subject of economics is Henry Hazlitt's classic "Economics In One Lesson." -
I'm sure they have figured out the fundamentals. ;-). Now let's see if the presidential candidates who claim to understand this cause and care about it know them.

Timing is everything. Hopefully Edwards gets a significant position in the next president's cabinet.
If "the pendulum" is going to swing, let's hope it swings away from the direction that Bush took: voluntary business regulations and international unilateralism. Hopefully the country will swing towards international collaboration, workplace and environmental protections and (dare I say) a redistribution of wealth away from the rich and towards new industries that will lift the poor out of poverty. -
Yes, like green jobs. Poverty and the environment are linked. I believe that wholeheartedly, and if we tackle climate change in a way that is innovative, we can lift people out of poverty at the same time.

I agree jsburman. I'd love to see Edwards as AG. God, the message that would send. But I wonder if he couldn't better serve the country in a different capacity. Either way, I'd love to see him in a very prominent position.

I think the real issue here is cutting poverty in half in ten years. And regarding this organization, We now have a chance to help him. I hope those who supported him as a candidate will at least think about signing up with this organization to help out.

I somehow doubt John McCain will put John Edwards on his cabinet.
