  • Scary! Children are trapped in collapsed schools and thousands are feared dead according to the Australian:

"The epicentre of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake was in Sichuan, striking 92km northwest of the provincial capital of Chengdu. It hit at 2.28pm (4.28pm AEST) when classes and offices were full.

Hundreds of children remained trapped in at least eight collapsed schools in Sichuan after the quake, which rattled cities across a large swath of the country and Southeast Asia.

An estimated 3000 to 5000 people were killed in Beichuan county in mountainous Sichuan alone, said the official Xinhua news agency, citing the local government. People were also killed in Chengdu and other parts of Sichaun, as well as in the provinces of Gansu and Yunnan.

Xinhua said 80 per cent of the buildings had collapsed in Beichuan and that 10,000 people were believed hurt in the county of 161,000 people.

The death toll was expected to rise sharply as authorities and rescue teams made contact with the worst-hit areas of Sichuan, where phone lines have been cutoff since the quake struck. "

  • Guys - I've spent the day with a friend of mine (featured in a previous show - http://current.com/items/88918623_shanghai_diaries_apri... trying to get ahold of her family. She's originally from Chongqing, about 135km from Chengdu (where the worst of the quake was), so haven't been getting as much info as I should.

Shanghaiist has been doing a good job with this:

Also, CNN (link in above blog) is following a very interesting story on how Twitter actually helped break the story.

    More as it unfolds...

[00.40] Well let me put my shoes on.

[00.43] Don't panic, don't panic. Calm down, calm down. *something that sounds like it's in dialect, can't tell*

    [00.58] Damnit. Why's there a earthquake? Damn.

[01.08] This is 2008, April, 5th..... May 12th 2:29. We're in Chengdu. Chengdu Sichun University *something something* Academy.

  • With all the techmology available in China, you'de think they would have some image stabilizing cell phones?
    chillwillNJ
  • Well isn't it a good thing that people aren't really how comedians describe them to be. If comedians are right, we'd all be walking stereotypes.

@ chillwillNJ: I think image stabilizing cellphones is a bit too much to ask for in the middle of an 7.8 earthquake. lol.
