I just saw a documentary called "hacking democracy". This documentary proves that the race between Bush and Kerry was rigged. They explain that the company Diebold, one of the top companies that manufacture the voting equipment and software for America, not only has a weak security which allowed the creators of the documentary to download the actual voting system off of their website, but also created a memory chip that allows a person to add or subtract votes from a designated party. Also the touch screen voting systems are able to subtract votes as well after the voting has taken place. This documentary should be watched by all Americans so they are able to see just how unsecure our voting system is, and how easy it is to change history.

So to those out there asking how does this "prove" anything or what about other elections? WATCH THE DOCUMENTRY! There is a part in the documentary where they actually go to the election officials’ office in Ohio and request the voting scripts that are released from the electronic voting machines days after the elections between Bush and Kerry. They are given new printouts with no signature, when the officials are asked for the originals Bev (in picture) is told that they are in a warehouse. Bev goes through the trash actually fighting a staff member for the bag and reveals that the original voting scripts are in the trash. After comparing the original signed scripts with the ones provided at the beginning without the signatures they realize there is a big discrepancy between the two. Anyone who has common sense can link the contents that are discovered in this film with past media controversy that occurred in the 2000 elections and other elections for that matter. All the miss counts and "technical issues". So maybe the word "prove" is too much. How about this, it gives support to the theory that our current voting system is failing us. With this voting system there is no way of knowing who America really chooses to be our voice and leaders. It supposes the theory that American citizens are merely given the impression that we are free to choose, yet are being chosen for.

Welp, if McCain wins we'll all know what happened... and I'll be buying some Canadian real estate.
-
THere was also something about the head of Diebold being one of the biggest Republican contributors.... That company and those people should be put out of commission, imo, and ALL Diebold machines surplussed. If we can't have honest elections, what kind of a democracy are we?????
-
With the Web 2.0 explosion, we've seen an expanse in "democratic", user-generated content; but is this same leap forward in technology and thinking equate to protected votes and information?
-
That the Republicans will rig elections via electronic voting doesn't surprise me. That the Democrats seem bored or indifferent to the fact that this fraud is costing them THEIR positions is befuddling.
Ask any Dem about vote rigging and all you get is an indifferent shrug and a stern warning from Nancy Pelosi to shut up about it.
You'd think they'd be on the news every single night bitching about this and personally standing guard over the Diebold machines after every election. But...um...nope.
Well, even though the Republicans are evil at least they give a shit about winning. The same cannot be said for the Democratic leadership. -
Republicans will do anything to win. I honestly hope they fix this, but it may be unfixable, since every software needs a way of accessing a part of it.

That's why the Secretary of State in California, Debra Bowen decerified Deibold machines for the election there until they could be proven to be safe and the ballots verifiable.
-
Could this be the same reason Al Gore/Joe Lieberman lost in 2000? I hope he's still not "fuming" over it, otherwise he will offset his carbon footprint he's worked so hard to minimize.

Hey demure, this sounds like an interesting doc. But how does it "prove" that the Bush/Kerry election was rigged?
-
Bush/Kerry election? How 'bout the 2000 election? Thanks to that, Bush has ruled over us for 8 years, and if McCain wins, it will be Bush's 3rd term.

I wonder how you would ever prove vote rigging?
Unless you actually had someone from Diebold with access to the machines come forward with video footage of himself actually switching votes -- then what else is there?
What "proof" would actually be acceptable?
If the actual Diebold technicians themselves never come forward and admit it -- and no one ever saw them do it because it was in a secure room in the dead of night -- then basically this is the perfect crime, isn't it?
Nothing less than video footage of the crime (and even then we couldn't really tell what they were doing to the machines, could we?) and a signed confession will meet the burden of proof for this particular crime, er, alleged crime. -
Maybe an investigation should be conducted.

If you are concerned about election integrity but you don't have the time to deal with it, the best thing you can do is Paypal some money to Black Box Voting and Open Voting Consortium:
http://www.blackboxvoting.org
http://www.openvotingconsortium.org
The woman pictured above is Bev Harris, from Black Box Voting. Alan Dechert is the prime mover at Open Voting Consortium. These people are my heroes.
A membership at Black Box Voting at a certain level gets you your very own Hacking Democracy DVD to show to your friends and family.
Open Voting Consortium has an open source demonstration prototype that is finally making some inroads into certain jurisdictions, but they need funds to keep moving forward.
Be careful! This topic is so serious that any overblown conspiracy claims or shrill attitudes will cause responsible people to dismiss the validity of the many important claims that are fully documented. BBV sometimes makes this mistake. Almost no one is prepared to cope with the moral choices and consequences that this information presents. So keep the discussion even-handed if you want to have a beneficial effect on the people around you. Otherwise you will be dismissed as a fringe activist, when what you really need to do is connect with peoples' core values.
Outrage can be a great thing but with this issue it usually backfires. It's better to stay calm yet purposeful. Real change can only happen if we prevent a polarization of attitudes.
Peace,

It worked in Florida. Someone once said "Never trust a state that's shaped like a penis." - but I still love the beaches there! Watch out for hanging chads.
