  • We should recruit some of Costa Rica's politicians. They'd be better than many we have here, and they'd probably be more loyal also.

  • At the very least the politicians in our country could try to justify this idea to themselves by saying that they would not only combating carbon emissions, but would also be creating resources for future loggers.

  • Certainly is good news as the a new report says that CO2 emissions are at the highest in 650,000 years. Problem with that is, scientists say, that the earth is losing its ability to absorb greenhouse gasses... which means the effects of global warming could be accelerated even further.

My question is this: if there is more CO2 in the atmosphere, and the oceans and forests are unable to absorb it... doesn't that mean there will be more of it in the air we breathe and the environment we live in? Are we coming close to having to be worried about the effects of CO2 poisoning in humans?

  • Wow -- what a tremendous idea -- and what an empowering statement to make to the world.

How about a grassroots movement in the US to make individual states become carbon-neutral??? Woo hoo!!! Bet THAT would take a lot of trees...

  • @ AbbyM - We cannot posion ourselves with CO2, carbon monoxide (CO) is toxic, we will merely not have any O2 to breath in and we will suffocate a horrible and painful death. Along with basically every other living thing on the planet.

We need to (No just the US but humans) re-plant the trees we have been cutting down and move onto more eco friendly paper sources and building materials, recycle wood when possible and paper when possible.

  • Don't know if this is true, but I had heard that Costa Rica has no national defense budget and has a 96% literacy rate.

    Plus warm waves.

    Gotta' get me down there.

  • Costa Rica has no defense budget??!?! Hmmmm... wonder what we in the USA could do for the environment if we had our entire defense budget at hand....

  • From wikipedia:

On December 1, 1948, President José Figueres Ferrer of Costa Rica abolished the country's army after victory in the civil war in that year. In a ceremony in the Cuartel Bellavista, Figueres broke a wall with a mallet symbolizing the end of Costa Rica's military spirit. In 1949, the abolition of the military was introduced in the Article 12 of the Costa Rican Constitution. However, the Civil Guard is equipped and uniformed as a military force, with military ranks, and is required by statute to become the national army in the event of the country being invaded by an external force.

I truly think this is the best you can do with an army.

  • To those who have not been, Costa Rica is one of the absolute most beautiful places I can imagine. Highly recommend venturing into the remote town of El Castillo, at the base of the Arenal Volcano, it is AMAZING!

  • Why can't the world be like this and open their eyes. It's places like this that make the world feel less hopeless about nature fading away.
