Obama on medicinal marijuana

Obama does not endorse legalization, but he does pledge to leave states to decide their own policy on medical marijuana and to not federally prosecute doctors and patients. Many states currently allow medicinal marijuana, but often those who have certified proscriptions or permits for growing, are still arrested by federal agents. It seems more important to focus our resources on real issues rather than on stopping old ladies who find solace for their glaucoma in THC.

  • Medicine is Medicine, and i personally would rather partake in herbs that mother earth grows naturally than pop a pill that some profit driven chemist cooks up....

  • Phil.....I been watchin you fer a week and you make me proud. But son, you need to let her rip and tell every one how you really feel. You remind me of one of my all time heroes only in a different shade. And you know but fur tha others it's the one and only Bob Marley. What a man he was and after he finishes his tour of the galaxy I do hope he will come back and join Current. I done told him about Phil and he said he might ask to do the jump inta him when he gets back. Now to talk to you Earth people especially Americans. Only a few of you vote, small percentage, and I know why. There's the ones that don't believe your vote is ever counted, the ones that can't stand to hear someone lie to em, you ever here the ol saying "he would rather climb the tallest tree around and lie than stand on the ground and tell the truth". Well, I ain't ever seen a politician that wasn't up in that there tree. If someone wants to be president that should disqualify them, them folks are mainly on a ego trip. I can see into the soul of Barack Obama and I like what I see. It makes me so happy to see that in some ways America has progressed, but in so many others it has congressed, if ya know what I mean. Obama is bein so careful to not offend anyone and he should know that there are some people so full of racial hatred that it don't matter what he says. Why don't he come out and speak his heart and let the vast majority of Loving, Kind people vote for the first time and demand to watch their votes be counted for once and stop this madness. Ya have an election and with one percent of the vote in ya project a winner. "Bull shit". I think I wrote this on The Great Wall of Texas but it needs repetin. In Oklahoma we took and had us an election for mayor and Clarence Doplemeir won. Twurnt long before he took and had him a fine house on a hill and servants, etc. Well he is tha one that counted the votes. Get my drift. And on that note, yall have been bamboozled by a Dick twice in tha last few odd yearsand I do mean odd. (Nixon and Cheney), this last one is a duzy. By the way if your name is Richard why do you call yourself Dick knowing it's slang for the male sex organ. Any of you kind folk know, please turn my light on also. I looked into Cheney's soul and damn near fell off my horse. Fur yall that know me, it takes a lot. Hell, I have ridden through Earthquakes and tornadoes. Wille Nelson, maybe the greatest American living today ,should be in Obamas cabinet if he is elected and not murdered by some homegrown crazy bastard terist. Willie is honest as the day is long and has never hurt anyone. Took me a look into his soul and it is clean as a cat's ass. I hope Obama wins and can finally be himself and someday soon I see a picture of him and Willie standing beside a twenty foot tall beautiful female Marijuana plant in the Rose garden. If marijuana was legal and cigarette's were not and smokers filled our beautiful prisons, then you wouldn't need medicinal marijuana..........Will
  • Typical. But he does give a thumbs up to the pharmaceutical industry whose drugs addict and kill people. But then, as long as they support political campaigns they're ok to politicians. Once again he backs away from committing to an issue by playing both sides. Just like he did when he voted present in the Illinois senate 130 times.

  • Yeah...because that and every issue is completely black and white. Pharm is all bad...nothing ever good comes from that industry, just addiction and death. I'm constantly amazed how the Obama haters won't miss any opportunity to bash. And then wonder why their credibility is so damaged. Sad.

  • Yes, I believe that Barack, for now, is trying to not give the spin doctors anything to spin on him. For this I believe that he is very intelligent. Looking into his soul, I find that even though others try to belittle HIM, he is still gracious back to them and tells it like it is. I believe that he has a lot of integrety. As for the maryjane, he won't be smoking any, but wait and see if they don't try to spin that one some how to make him look bad. The avalanche of hate and prejudice, etc. will tumble down as soon as he is the clear nominee...

Otherwise, fire it up for glaucoma...or a change of attitude...matter of fact, roll one big one up for the spin doctors...

  • Will, you are a bit long winded, but I'll give you credit...you said a lot...and yes the theft of the lofty position has been going on in this country for a long time...mainly starting with Nixon...and now we have yet another Big Dick in the Big House on the Hill.

Time to get the scoundrels out...and clean up the congress too..

As for Willy, you know he got Pres Carter in trouble for smokin up on the roof of casa blanca...but that doesn't throw any shadow on his character...that just shows how the narrow minded republicans will go to any length to disparage the good leaders of our nation, if they are Democrats who try to do something good for we the people...

  • I would really, really like to hear a discussion about hemp. Industrial hemp is as important as cannabis for medicine. Industrial hemp could replace many of the products now being made from oil and chemicals.

Everyone wants to talk about cannabis, which is important, but hemp as a cash crop for farms is equally important. Corn used as bio-fuel depletes food needed all over the world. Hemp could be used in place of corn.

Just asking, but wouldn't hemp, which helps to cultivate the soil and removes many toxins from our air be an important discussion? Why is it so hard to get people to talk about industrial hemp? Is it because cannabis and hemp are the same plant?
    Conniepae
  • I thought you guys already cleaned up congress? Barack Heusein Obama yet again fails to take a stance on an issue? He will be hammerd in the debates. He can't even put away Clinton. I would vote for Condoleeza Rice, Im sick of people acting like if your not for Obama your a racist LMAO. Who is this guy?? 4 years ago nobody knew him.
John McCain was offered a realese from his POW camp, he refused on the grounds that his fellow prisoners where not to be released as he was going to be. He remained there another 5 years. That is taking a stance, that my friends, is guts. What does Huesein know about that??
    WarFarris
  • They took me out of my accordion case today and I could feel a new beautiful day commencing. Then I heard my new friend Will crying and asked why. He said he was trying to pry open some minds and felt pain in his heart. I told him that he goes on to long and he gave me a strange look. He said Hell, I didn't go fur enough. Even friends can't agree. People have been using Marijuana or the same plant by any label you want to place on it for as long as they have been here. It is a miracle of the Universe, just like everything else. Sure it can be abused and not reach it's potential just like a newborn child can become Hitler or some other asshole. You ought to wake up, you could be wearing it, fueling your vehicle, and endless possibilities that are vast now and will grow so much especially after some people pull their head out of their ass and look around. I don't partake of it because I have no arms, legs, lips, etc. but Hitler smoked it some and set me on fire once. He started eating it in brownies and cookies and it calmed him. The Hitler that everybody hates was the result of his friend inventing methamphetamine. He snorted it, smoked it, ran it up, and once even rubbed some on his ass. His drug abuse made poor old Elvis look like a girl scout. He kept me up for days on end and it was a living hell. Now I am in Heaven, much better. Will is a smart man. He told me to keep my responses long to avoid the tuthers....................................Richard
  • Very well put, Mousache...

Conniepae, I'd have to say that the concept surrounding hemp has been so villianized that most people don't care to research it. Woody Harrelson went to court years ago to try to legalize the production of hemp for clothing and other useful products...but I don't know what the outcome was...

WarFarris, your playing the role of the right-wing hypocrite...I'll give McCain credit for his honorable service to this nation back then, but of late, he does not follow the majority of the will of the people of this nation...Just a Bush third term... another patsy puppet with strings for the War Dogs, Defense Giants, Big Oil, and Multi Nationals to pull at will...

War defiles the innocent and exhonorates the wicked...so, I question your motives for more WAR, because if we get McCain we'll be stuck with more of the usual...and guts for war will do nothing for this planet except more killing of innocents and detruction...

In the face of adversity, it takes more guts to promote peace...Look at what Jesus did toward that effort...Or have you have you been so busy professing what a good Christian you are that you've forgotten already...he's still trying through the efforts of those of us who are concerned to promote peace...So maybe Barack knows more than you Right-Wing Hypocrites think about courage and what is good for the future of this planet...EXAMINE YOUR CONSCIENCE..!!!
    PlatoTacius
  • WarFarris…who called you a racist? You're the one bringing that crap to this thread. Clinton has been hard to put away because she's a much better candidate than John McCain. Take a look around...a majority of people are against the war, think we are going in the wrong direction economically, want some form of health care and don’t think our country should be torturing people. Senator McCain is on the wrong side of all of those issues. Somebody is going to get hammered in the debates and it’s going to McCain.

As a war hero he has my respect. If we were voting to give him another medal…I’d vote yes. But that doesn’t mean he gets to be president.

  • Word...

Cindy McCain, is a hard working well respected woman who reportedly funded the initiation of John's political career, so why is it that recently He called her a Beeaaaatch...maybe because he's showing signs of having become a pompous ass...

I agree krag, not exactly presidential material...
    PlatoTacius
  • say it again conniepae ;) a lot of people are just in the dark about that, or they simply assume it must support a drug culture they don't agree with.

people have been conditioned to respond to issues like this due to all the propaganda for the "war on drugs" just like the "war on terra'" etc. and funny how the government always, always turns that shit against us...

It's ironic too that alcohol is legal and yet more dangerous; and yet, as most socially-acceptable vices do, distribution survives relatively undisturbed; protected, in fact. I guess realistically a nation chawk-fula drunken volatile alcholics makes a much better alternative to a lazier stoner nation??? =P
    echoz
  • People have been conditioned and all we can do is educate and inform others about the reasonableness of medicinal marijuana.

Also I glad to see that Obama is not going to prosecute patients and doctors.
    jubal
  • PlatoTacius, you are correct, hemp has been villainized, not by fact, but by 'Yellow Journalism' and spin. Anytime a discussion gets going, they focus on stories like the three kids who dug up a grave, removed the head and used the skull as a pipe.

The fact that three dysfunctional, criminal boys can be used to stop a discussion to demonize a plant is nothing short of 'yellow journalism'.

Yellow journalism was used in the 30's by Hearst who owned major newspapers and had a large investment in timber. Strange how the more things change, the more they stay the same.

We have progressed to the point where we have instant news, yet 'yellow journalism' and spin is alive and well in the U.S. One would think progress would supersede 'yellow journalism' and spin, but alas, one would be wrong.

  • i'm sorry, isn't that how it is supposed to be? i thought the united states of america meant fifty independent states. the federal government has forgotten this, as i think much of our country has.
    itdango
  • Again, I do not hate Obama and you only stop adult discussion with constant responses and accusations like that. It is a FACT that the pharmaceutical industry spends BILLIONS of dollars a year on advertising legalized drug dealing in this country that not only hooks adults but their children as well because prescription drugs are easier to get a hold of now in their own homes. And no one here said that ALL they do is wrong, but I don't see how you can dismiss what they are doing that is WRONG ( such as filling political coffers for favors regarding passing drugs without the proper research on their effects) just to defend a man over the issue. Why doesn't he call for legalizing it? Because that's politics and you can't have something that works taking profits from Big Pharma.

  • It seems as though if it can't be regulated { it never could before it was an issue} he is not for legalising it on the national level. If we can grow our own vegetables in our back yards{they can't be regulated} are they going to ban this to? I forgot nobody can afford their own homes anymore! Be real, It is a natural, god given drug{excuse the term} or plant that causes less harm than any pharmaceutical on the market. Why doesent he ban alcohol instead and leagalize maruana, alchohol does more damage to our society than maruanan ever did in all the centuries compiled
    johnlocke
  • It would seem that no civilization has ever successfully banned anything and, as anyone with a pulse can see, marijuana will not be the first. So why do we keep clogging our prisons with non-violent offenders?

Full blown legalization will never happen and would be political suicide to call for but the day is approaching when Cannabis will be decriminalized and regulated.

    Bank it.
    mako2424
  • I agree with Mr. Obama that marijuana isn't that much of a problem that it has to be dealt with immediately.

Have all the users smoke through a vaporizor. That should take care of the 2nd hand smoke and the unusable particles.

  • The more I hear about less Federalism the better. I agree with Obama that he shouldn't get out in front of the legalization issue. This country needs to return more control to individual communities. We can pass laws that remove all Federal involvement in marijuana policies regarding medical or controlled distribution. Progress on this issue will come slowly, but it will come.

  • Here's a real answer to the medical marijuana question.

End the failed War on Drugs.
    Hawkmang
  • in response to jan,
i think that it is BECAUSE of pharm industries that THC is not legalized. they could not patent all of the living strands of weed and therefore could not corner the market on THC. that is how they make money. even tho monsanto has proved that it is possible to patent life (sadly), it would be next to impossible for drug companies be the only suppliers of weed. its a tough spot for obama to be in because, like he says, it would use up a lot of political capital. i know in my heart that obama has a lot of progressive ideas, but he is smart enough to look around the country and is trying not to alienate a lot of people. while major changes are needed in this world, most of us can only handle baby steps..... we need to regionalize our politics. the constitution does say that, and obama is advocating states right to decide and pledging not to interfere. seems pretty solid.

  • Right, and if too many states go the way to decriminalizing it watch the federal govt then step in to somehow try to derail the progress of states like they are trying to do regarding global warming efforts by states. And just to clarify, I never stated I was for the federal govt. legalizing it or not legalizing it. My comments were simply taking note of the hypocrisy of this federal govt. and politicians when it comes to legalizing marijuana in contrast to their support of big pharma that I think frankly does more to hurt people than marijuana does.
    JanforGore
  • Please let's not let this become a wedge issue. I agree with Obama, leave it to the states. It should be legal for all use. If it was available at the store all safely packaged and taxed, people would buy that before the street stuff that might be mixed with who knows what? Now lets figure out what we are going to do about the war and health care?
  • Philly in response to the title. 'Oh really, I didn't even know that he is sick."
  • ^ thanks matilynn....

  • right on Marilynn_Murray. and if Obama means what he says about 'leaving it to the states' that in and of itself is a HUGE deal. at the very least I trust Obama to depoliticize the Justice Department and get this country's priorities straight. Whether the politicians come out and say it or not, I believe they know the "War on Drugs" has failed. Whether it dies a quiet death or loudly heralded out of the public lexicon matters not to me, just as long as it dies.

  • I'm still waiting for him to tell us why he touts 'clean coal' and nuclear and expects us to believe he cares about the environment. And that directly corrolates to war and healthcare.

  • connie:
it is not because cannabis and hemp are the same plant, but rather that connection was exploited by the gov to protect dupont, hearst, and other major companies that would lose market share if hemp were used for paper, plastic, building materials, medicine....

"William Randolph Hearst (Citizen Kane) and the Hearst Paper Manufacturing Division of Kimberly Clark owned vast acreage of timberlands. The Hearst Company supplied most paper products. Patty Hearst's grandfather, a destroyer of nature for his own personal profit, stood to lose billions because of hemp.

In 1937, Dupont patented the processes to make plastics from oil and coal. Dupont's Annual Report urged stockholders to invest in its new petrochemical division. Synthetics such as plastics, cellophane, celluloid, methanol, nylon, rayon, Dacron, etc., could now be made from oil. Natural hemp industrialization would have ruined over 80% of Dupont's business. except for maybe coal and oil

but whats wrong with a plant that could easily be grown for personal use, and that helps people function..

It's like saying no to some1 that asks for a hand getting up....

Jesus... now i know why. the government is that sick kid poking at a turtle on its back that cant get up, while laughing at it.

And for those constant complainers out there (you know who you are) maybe there is some activity you could come up with to help you lighten up a little.
