Space Politics: Will Barack Obama Destroy the U.S. Space Program?

"NASA has lost focus and is no longer associated with inspiration," he said. "I don't think our kids are watching the space shuttle launches. It used to be a remarkable thing. It doesn't even pass for news anymore."

What utter and complete rubbish.

NASA is hard at work researching and designing the next space vehicles to carry man to the Moon, and to Mars (Project Contellation, the Ares Launch Vehicles). We've got two rovers on Mars that STILL WORK after TWO YEARS. We're thinking moon bases, Mars trips! Kids in 6th grade now will be our first moon colonists!

Space may not be all glamour and glitz after we've done the moon thing, but our planet is not in good shape, the way we live. Space exploration teaches us about Biology, Engineering, Astronomy, Economics and much much more! What are we supposed to give young bright eyed students to dream about? Every science has interest in space in some way. Medicine is more effective if created in a micro-gravity environment. Plants grow in different ways, same a crystals. If we don't encourage exploration beyond our world sure we'll have plenty to focus on here...but when we look up at the stars at night does he really think we'll stop caring?

I once heard of a teacher that asked her students "What do you want to be when you grow up? I hope you've all grown out of the 'I want to be an astronaut' phase." I wanted to vomit. Space Exploration is vital to our growth as a human race, pushing the boundaries of exploration and scientific discovery. If we stop, we stagnate.

We've got focus, Mr. Obama. You've had my vote up to this point...and for the first time since realizing you were the right choice for me...I'm second guessing.

  • I think this will prod NASA into cleaning up it's act. Besides, theres still the USAF Space Command, which has an operation of about the same size as NASA.
