Transit-Oriented Development in Maine

The Wall Street Journal recently published an excellent article that describes the trend towards transit-oriented real estate development. American households now spend nearly as much on transportation (motor vehicles, for the most part) as they do on housing, and developers are responding by building these “transit-oriented” neighborhoods that minimize time and money spent in the car.

Here in Maine, many of our small towns and Main Streets were originally “transit-oriented” around local train stations, streetcar lines, rivers, or harbors. Today, though, the absence of any really convenient transit networks limits the feasibility of this type of development. Nevertheless, we do have a couple of new transit-oriented development ideas in the works.
