and planned to walk his message from Chattanooga, Tn to Jackson, Ms, on April 23, 1963 he was shot in the head twice and killed. Several attempts to deliver this letter has resulted in nearly 700 people being arrested and beaten, some prisoned and fed crushed glass in their food and hit with electric cattle prods... the letter never made it to it's destination.
On April 23, 2008 Ellen Johnson and myself walked the original letter ( given to us by Bill's widow) from Attalla, Alabama to Jackson, Mississippi, 320 miles in order to bring recognition to William Moore and all the Freedom walkers of 1963.
I would like to thank the very nice people and Police in Alabama and Mississippi, your concern for our safety was greatly appreciated. We have come a long way since 1963.

As an atheist, I must comment that:
All atheists are not satan worshipping devils.
Atheists are ethical. Can we make those conclusions from this?

There are still millions of Americans that would not vote for a black man.... is this "Freedom walk" pertinent today? There is no doubt in my mind: This effort by Ellen and Ken is as urgent today as it was when Bill Moore was gunned down.

Congratulations Ellen and Ken. Freedom is never won, but must be continuously maintained. Thank you for reminding Alabama, Mississippi, and all of us that hatred still must be confronted and exposed for what it is. No one is ever free until the least one of us can live without fear: fear of an imperialist state; fear of the discrimination based on race, sexuality, beliefs or the lack thereof; fear of physical harm, hunger and disease. Let’s forget what makes us different and focus on our humanity.

As a Southerner, I am glad to see that reason is invading the deep south! Hopefully, this is something that closes a tragic chapter in America! Thank you Ken and Ellen!

This was a great effort by Ellen and Ken

As an Ethical Culturist, i applaud your efforts to engage the government of Mississippi and also your belief in civil rights for all...
As someone who grew up in the South, I appreciate the courageousness and selflessness of your walk. I can remember when heroes like yourself were shot for much less.
Freedom, let's remember, is a right which is continuously earned. You have reminded us all of this- and you have my gratitude!

No offense to open-minded southerners, but it astounds me how reluctant the south has been to move on! I'm speaking from absolutely no experience, since I've never been south of NY, but it seems that they're just a microcosm of hate. Have southerners (in general) progressed at all, idealistically? Congrats, and good work, Ellen and Ken!

Wow that is brave. It is a good thing they had camera's or else they would have been shot.
Songs were really good.

Great job. Not many people would have done what you just did. Keep up the good work. We need more Atheists like you guys. Proud and loud.

That's an amazing feat really. Walking 20 miles a day for 14 days straight has got to be a strain on the legs.
Thanks for your efforts, Ken and Ellen

Isn't it ironic that we supposedly evil atheists are usually at the forefront on civil rights, and supposedly good religious people are usually the ones trying to stop or reverse progress on civil rights, the more religious they are, the worse they tend to be. Look at the most religious parts of the US, and they are the most backward. Abolition of slavery, racial equality, women's rights, gay rights, you name it, most fundamentalists were and are against it. Religion apologists point to religious groups who fought to end slavery, but the vast majority, especially in the South, the most religious part of the country, fought to keep it.

Great job ...KenL and Ellen. This video documents a little known episode in the fight for civil rights. A fight that continues in this country 45 years later. We, as atheists, will no longer "get to the back of the bus".
-
Excellent video! The Freedom Walk was an important event that completed one chapter of the ongoing Civil Rights story...not only in the south, but throughout the USA. Thank you Ellen and Ken!
-
Unlike believers, atheist don't need to be motivated by the idea of a god(s) rewarding us with "eternal bliss" to do good things for the world
-
Very well done. Love the Phil Ochs song.
Shame on you Haley Barbour! Shame!
Some of us do the right thing simply because its the right thing to do!
-
Awesome work, people! I wish I could have been there to make the walk with you. As a "latte sippin' liberal" in the Pacific NW, it still shocks me to see the backwards attitude often found in many areas of the country. The whole world needs to see this video.

As history as shown, where religion rules, so does tyranny. Open the Bible or Koran and you can justify slavery, racisim, sexism and homophobia. As far as we've come, we still have a long way to go, but Ellen and Ken tacked on the positive miles
-
It reminded me of bygone days, and it brought back memories of the '60s

This gov of Miss is a politian with aspirations to move up in the political field, we don't need anyone else in Washingon that does not beleave in our civil rights laws. If he did beleive in civil rights he would have accepted the letter and made a comment on how far we have come in this country, but he wouldn't even step out to take the letter. What does that say about him. We who care applaude Ellen and Ken for the brave thing they did

What Ken and Ellen did was a brave thing and also bought to the front line the civil right problems still in the country. We still have a long way to go.

Ken and Ellen - Totally awesome Freedom Walk. I kept reading the daily messages in The Broward County Atheists meetup.com site to keep track of your progress. I'm so glad you made it to Mississippi with William Moore's letter. I'm so sorry that Governor Barbour could not find the time to accept the letter.

I applaud Ellen and Ken for doing this. what I find very sad about this is the lack of people walking in support or greeting them at the end.
-
Awesome! I actually got goosebumps watching this.
