Meet Zero... veteran of the war in Iraq, artist and Muslim.

Powerful.
He looks like the guy from the show "Sleeper Cell". Are you sure that show wasn't written based on this guy?-

I'm glad that our entire infantry is not totally ignorant grunts. Good artist too.
-
He's an excellent artist. Really innovative. I have another video I'm working on of his art.
-
Artist warrior. Very interesting vid. Thanks dbocaz for the invite to watch this.
-
Great video! It means so much to hear the story from a real person. Interesting guy.
-
These are the guys that I want to talk to.
The real deal.
His mind's history has a fresh perspective that deserves to be heard. -
Nice art and nice story. Reinforces the importance of judging individuals as individuals... There is really no point in labeling anyone or any group unless you want to generalize which obviously raises many other issues and problems.

It's been a very enlightening journey for me since I've started doing these documentaries on Veterans. I'm not pro-war at all, but I've tried to open my mind and reach out to veterans to understand war.
Check out our other Veteran videos if you get a chance:

My goal is to tie all these videos together as an overall look at war through the last 100 years.

It's not about being pro or anti war. Not really, warfare is such a small part of life, in the larger scope of things. It's really about decisions, and braving the consequences of choosing a particular course. When I speak of the larger scope I mean our collective capacity to be human. Freedom is about choices, and providing the best opportunity for making the most beneficial, and tactical choice for self and others. War is a social exchange, just like music, and art or theater. Thats why any war zone is called the "Theater of War". This cyber space is a social zone as well where we exchange thoughts and ideas. I embrace my path and there are only two ways to live, honorably or dis honorably, according to my choice's impact in my life...

that was an unexpected insight. (i only wished that when the young soldier was pointing out his painting, that you cut first to a MS of the area before cutting to a CU...)(i kept moving my head to see the whole picture (but I couldn't) ).

CIPHERBEY... well said... I have some more footage where Zero talks about Joseph Campbell's journey of the hero and what you said ties very well into that
misticblue - I probably have a master shot of the art. Good suggestion. I should add that. -
Life has many faces, and so does this war. i appreciate the reality from someone who has lived it, and from those who are still living it whether in the trenches or not. Exceptional artist, fabulous video. FYI, this would be cool if extended into a documentary, hint, hint.
-
No need to hint :) We're talking about doing more. We have about 30-40 minutes of good footage already and I spoke with Zero about some new directions we can go with this. He has many more stories to tell... he's a pretty interesting guy.
-
whoever put this story together did a hell of a job. and i admire his bravery for stickin' it out even when it seemed like certain people would mess with him.

It was really difficult for Muslims in general after 9-11... I'd like to talk with him more about his family and their experiences. It's a great story and I'd like to do more with it.

If you can get in touch with Abdul Kawi, let him know that Yama and Boaz are still kicking it in Santa Barbara
