At a magnitude of 7.9, the earthquake that rocked China's Sichuan province is now estimated to be the country's deadliest in recent history. Fatalities have tallied over 20,000 in an industrial city that was reduced to a living situation most closely resembling a refugee camp. As national guards continue rescue efforts in rain drenched rubble, the potential for after-shocks has driven most families from their homes. Access to any type of building or upright structure still standing is prohibited by Chinese officials. Without shelter, citizens unable to evacuate the area sleep in plastic bags to keep dry.

Despite the Chinese governments efforts, the rain-drenched hillsides remain unstable and prone to landslide. International sympathy has started to come in from the United States, international relief organizations and even from the Dalai Lama who offered his prayers to the victims.

  • Strange choice of music to go with it, kind of down plays the seriousness.

The 500,000 USD offered by the United States seems meager compared to the 5 Million USD + Additional supplies provided by the Chinese Government after Katrina.

  • me, too ... the US and everybody else should step up here and in Burma, where a a colossal Cyclone is about to lay waste to an already-devastated populace.

  • $500,000 ????? Are you shitting me? The current death toll is over 20,000, that's less than $25 per person. The United States is apathetic, cruel, selfish, and inhumane.

  • This confuses me. Everyone slams on America for being "ignorant" and "selfish". But I fail to see where we are responsible for other countries like China. We can help, but its not our JOB to do it. And the devastation left by the cyclone, the military gov. will only allow certain access to the victims. Step back and look at the situation before u slam the U.S.

  • My heart goes out to the Chinese people.

Funny how China and Mynanmar, the same governments who have caused much suffering amongst the Buddist people have come under such terrible natural disasters lately.

    Perhaps Karma does exist.

  • This rescue mission really contrasts greatly with how American government reacted after Katrina.

It reminds me of Greenday's Saints are coming video, except this time the soldiers really helped in China.

Also see this video of earthquake light captured 30 minutes before the quake.
People are saying "it's beautiful" but didn't know less than an hour later, this earthquake happened.

  • My hearts go out to the regions that is go through too much. We should not be blaming the U.S or the Chinese government because it was a mother nature. However, who is to blame is the contractor that made the f#@%! out builds that killed young girls and boys. That is who we all should blame......
