Immigrants Sedated Without Medical Reason

The U.S. government has injected hundreds of foreigners it has deported with dangerous psychotropic drugs against their will to keep them sedated during the trip back to their home country, according to medical records, internal documents and interviews with people who have been drugged.

The government's forced use of antipsychotic drugs, in people who have no history of mental illness, includes dozens of cases in which the "pre-flight cocktail," as a document calls it, had such a potent effect that federal guards needed a wheelchair to move the slumped deportee onto an airplane.

"Unsteady gait. Fell onto tarmac," says a medical note on the deportation of a 38-year-old woman to Costa Rica in late spring 2005. Another detainee was "dragged down the aisle in handcuffs, semi-comatose," according to an airline crew member's written account. Repeatedly, documents describe immigration guards "taking down" a reluctant deportee to be tranquilized before heading to an airport.

Involuntary chemical restraint of detainees, unless there is a medical justification, is a violation of some international human rights codes. The practice is banned by several countries where, confidential documents make clear, U.S. escorts have been unable to inject deportees with extra doses of drugs during layovers en route to faraway places.

  • Injections from drugs such as antipsychotic drugs can have an alarmingly harmful on people who do not need it. But, ICE doesn't care as always, especially concerning human rights.

  • Good grief! I can't imagine how terrible things must be in other countries when people are drugged to make them go back there! I always wondered how all those deported people were taken out of the country! This whole things makes me feel the need to be sedated.

  • "wow...wtf" is right! this makes me real angry. !@#$!#$

  • This is not right, although, if they fly them out of the country, imagine if one wanted to get revenge, or even had it planned to try and take over the plane. I would much rather have them be sedated then have even the slightest risk of an emergency to happen.

  • This is part of a series partnership between the Post and 60 Minutes on the issue of immigrant detention in the US. Check out the 60 Minutes piece here:

  • the government could use other non drug related ways to send the deportees home, like hypnosis. the government could also send them home by sending them on "vacation."

So what, GTFO, any questions? Don't want the drugs, don't ILLEGALLY invade the country.

  • I don't wanna be sedated! Come on America why don't they sedate all of those f##ked-up politicans!

  • If people are generally outraged by this, why is it that everyone is voting against the story being told?

  • I'm not surprised. Human rights abuses under the Bush administration is nothing new and should shock no one. It will be interesting to see how the world reacts if/when the next President stops treating people like deranged psychopaths bent on destroying America.

  • Again, drugs are the involved…

Who is willing to step up and take the baton of responsibility!?

I agree about the story not being told due to voting it down being a problem on Current.com

The drugging of these people...whoever they are is outrageous. How can we get the story out there if people are voting down ..there may be an element of people wanting their story to be more popular or others who think it is a bad story and don't like them being mistreated.
This is also bothering me when I post stories that are to help people get information on askapatient.com. It is OK if someone doesn't like it but the link needs to be presented to people to save lives. It keeps getting negative scores and will not make it to TV. This could also be Industry trolls voting it down..

  • It's great, this mentality we have. Because so many of us were born in the land of the free, we will never know what it feels like to live in a place where even hope is simply a dream, where your only viable chance of having a decent life is to find a way into America, no matter what. America will not always be the super power...all great powers and dynasties come to an end. At some point, we'll be 'invading' someone else's country for a chance at freedom. Let us hope they're as welcoming and compassionate as we are.

  • Carolyn,

Could it be that some people vote as to whether or not they agree with the issue the piece reports, rather than on the quality of the piece itself--as in, "I vote no because I think drugging immigrants is bad?"

Not only interesting, but also creative penal discipline. What other humane method could be used to deport an illegal alien, against their will, or to suppress great physical refusal. If drugs used did not impart any life-threatening illness, but to sustain the deportee in a sedated condition for their flight home, this has been a brilliant exercise of creative discipline. No excessive force, taser guns, or police abuse was employed. The deportees do have rights, but they are not citizens. US also has "rights". If someone is here illegally, and courts have determined their removal from US is legally appropriate, it is extremely generous that US provides the transportation to deport individuals to their countries of origin. If chemical sedation is required to calm the deportees' physical or violent objections, the US is quite within their rights and should be congratulated for using a painless solution to this situation. In this case, the use of the term deportees "rights" has been completely observed-- especially in view of their obvious violation of US alien rights! Come on, Liberals, get over it! US had the balls to do the "RIGHT" thing for a change!

  • Awww, I seem insensitive again. Hey I'm all for LEGAL immigrants to the US, we're ALL descendants of immigrants. They're a huge difference in the type of immigrant today and the type of immigrant a few hundred years ago. People came to this country to become 1 thing and 1 thing only, AMERICANS. They weren't coming to America to become ________-Americans. No one clung to their hyphenated bullshit title. I'm sorry but I'm sick of seeing our country getting trashed by illegal immigrants for the sake of having to recognize more and more subclasses of Americans. It's high time this country closes it's borders and gets back to the basics of being a country UNITED under 1 flag. Our flag doesn't see color, it's time our citizens stop dwelling on it as well.

I'd also be willing to bet that there is NOT an assembly line blanket policy to "drug" each and every person being deported, it's likely something reserved for those who need it due to their hostilities from their assumed right to be here illegaly. Leave peacefully and I'm sure they'd be allowed to do so.
  • O-kay! Um...one day Liberal, we're gonna have a little chat. I can't figure out where you're coming from and I'd really like to understand your pov. You baffle me.

Plenty of comments are being flagged as abuse, on this story and the likes of it. Whist we understand everyone is passionate about their views, it’s important that we keep the chatter and thread on discussion, not personal attacks or those that may cause upset.

  • Still like to know where one of my comments was MIS-represented to be likening immigrants to animals... Oh and Neghie, anytime, feel free to pm me if you have a question. I don't bite.
  • Pretty soon any kid that shows aggressive behavior at an age to early is going to be drugged, I'm not surprised the government would do this.
    Narijima
  • Hell blame society as whole for that one, now every time a kid acts like a little shit someone comes up with a new "_____ disorder" and throws a new drug at it. What ever happened to good old fashioned discipline and explaining to a child why certain behaviors are unacceptable? Now it's "let's just respect johnny/ jane's life choice", it's just plain idiotic the way some kids are raised these days. I'm not implying that there aren't sick kids out there with disorders, but I'd be willing to bet better than half are just raised with little or no discipline/ sense of personal responsibility in their lives.
  • "let's just respect johnny/ jane's life choice", first, i wouldn't wanna know how it would be to be raised in any other fashion, as well as, WTF is wrong with accepting what your child wants to be?!?! You can't force them to do something(i mean you can if you have no heart) that they don't want to. It's not about the parent it's about the child, it wasn't their choice to be here. So what they want is what they get. I'm not saying just let em run wild, their absolutely has to be boundaries but if they express total disdain, stop. Although, i do agree with the Hell blame society as whole for that one, now every time a kid acts like a little shit someone comes up with a new "_____ disorder" and throws a new drug at it. I know of a time when nobody had ADD/ADHD, now EVERYONEhas it. UUGGHH. Let's do something about this.

  • If this were like the Europeans in the early tweintieth century these people would not be drugged like animals..since they are from the thid world and non-European and the US citizens are tamed the police state recently has gotten away with murder (literally) and no one is going to fight for their rights (because of the fear of the patriot act) or care... where this country is heading is disgusting it makes you ashamed.. DISGUSTING!

  • ""Our flag doesn't see color, it's time our citizens stop dwelling on it as well.
    ""

really ""Liberal Extinction"" check the census and reports of what type of immigrants get accepted and what race they are...Our Flag doesn't see color...yeah right. Our country always sees color when their is a national disaster..especially if they are people of color needing help. In fact when countries have political crisis I have seen first hand Haitians and black Cubans getting turned away while anyone white gets the dry foot wet foot policy. I have a degree in International politics under the Harvard grad program don't try that crap on me you bigot!

If this country didn't have a race problem those racist uneducated, hick, idiots in W Virginia who registered Democrat wouldn't vote for Mccain if Hillary wasn't a choice for them. This country has a serious color problem!
