If I said you had a beautiful body would you hold it against me?

It's an old joke and perhaps a tad out of touch but still funny on occasion. Catcalling, men and some women, just being men? Someone actually did a thesis based on this and found some women look at it as an assault while others see it as affirmation. My question is, is it really that serious? As with all things, moderation is the key and there will always be the idiot that takes it too far or too personally and screws it up for the rest but, is it really a blithe on society or simply and exercise in free speech?

  • I think it all depends on where the wolf whistling is taking place. For example: if I'm walking down the street and come guy calls to me from his car as he drives past I take it as a compliment and continue on my way.

But the other day some kid followed me down the hallway saying, "heyy baby you is fineeeee" and I finally stopped him and said he was an idiot.

But no I don't think there should be any legislation passed on cat-calling... unless it turns into a harassment situation (like in an office).

  • Now that makes sense. I think taken in stride and done properly no harm no foul. No need to follow someone though.

  • Here's a VC2 pod about the site Hollaback (there are different sites for different locales), which was mentioned in this article.

  • I can see where some of that would be very disturbing to say the least.

  • I think there's a fine line between complimenting and objectifying, and some guys just don't seem to know when they've crossed it.

  • There really can't be a law passed to show where a line is drawn regarding appropriate versus inappropriate comments since the matter is partially subjective, but as someone who takes offense to catcalling, I know that if a guy wouldn't say it to me in front of his parents, then don't say it. Men have a much better chance of getting a girl's attention and/or phone number if he approaches her with a little more respect than shouting out an observation about her physique.

Once, a man shouted to me that I had a great ass. I told him that he was very observant but very rude. He mumbled "sorry" and slunk away. I really do believe most men who make these comments are not looking to attack me, but they just don't think before they speak.

  • Oddly it isn't always about attracting the girl so much as entertaining the buddies. Deeper still, sometimes it's a nervous reaction to something perceived as unattainable .
