Last Friday, around 30 bicycle riders (and a few inline skaters) took to the freeways during rush hour, racing past cars stuck in traffic. According to one of the organizers from Crimanimal Mass, the aim was "to raise questions about the transportation infrastructure. In a city ruled by cars, why is it that you can get places faster on bikes?”

oil spills, concrete endless maze and no helmets oh my.
-
I always wonder how the dimensions of the freeway and the epripheral landscape change, when you are on your bike, exposed to your 5 senses, rather than covered up in a car shell. must be pretty cool in LA weather -
No skateboards? Lame.
-
See that crazy tall bike in the top left picture? How the hell do you get on/off that thing. What do you do if you have to stop suddenly? I saw guy on one of those bikes here in philly and have been wondering ever since.

You get a running start and climb up the bike while it's moving.
Stopping must be a pain in the ass though. -
In a place that can get quite busy, this is a very ignorant idea. Either they are doing it for attention, or they lost a bet. And i bet the first time one of them get injured, you will be seeing a lawsuit.

i think this is awesome, gliding effortlessly through jammed traffic. this needs to be in a movie.

I can easily see where they're coming from & love the idea. I spent a week in LA and the only thing I didn't enjoy was the dreadful traffic.

nice stunt. It might actually work to get people thinking. It sure does every time I see a cyclist pass by in rush hour traffic jams.
-
With gas prices going through the roof, it won't be long before this becomes the norm, like in Taiwan.
-
We love our cars. We love our freedom we get with the cars. Can you pick your nose on your bike? I probably would, heh, but I'd look around first. In my car i'm just like F***k it.

True that. And I've done it enough to make castles on my jeans!
-
Right on!!!!!!!!!!!! Create more Bike lanes. Wake up people. Cars are not the only way to get around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Love it! We should fight for Bike\Skate lanes on freeways!
-
I'M TIRED OF THE PEOPLE WHO KEEP ON THINKING THAT THIS WAS JUST DONE TO GET "ATTENTION"......ACTUALLY, I STAND CORRECTED IT WAS TO GET ATTENTION. THE ATTENTION OF EVERY OTHER PERSON WHO KEEPS THINKING CARS ARE THE BEST MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION. BIKES RULE AND I LOVE THE WAY YOU CHOSE TO MAKE THAT STATEMENT :)
-
This is awesome. I will ride in the next one.

The fact that rollerbladers participated just verifies that it's nothing short of a circus act.
-
You guys and Jimmy Carter are my heroes.
-
YES!! i wish i could have been there!!! nothing beats the feeling of passing by cars stuck in traffic on your bike. keep the love between your legs!

I used to have one of the double decker bikes. It's just two bike frames welded on top of each other. It's tricky to get on, you have to get it going and grab onto the handlebars and give it a sideways angle and be quick, or you'll bust ass.
-
i love the idea. not only does it help the environment, it could probably help alleviate the problem of obesity in our country.

good idea. i've had to sit in that traffic for hours.
-
I agree, this was for attention, +/-, and it's working. OBVIOUSLY, because it got us thinking.DUH
-
@dmass5 I think they all agreed that it was every man for himself, as far as injury and potential legal issues. It's definitely illegal to ride a bike on a freeway, at least where this is taking place. And for good reason; a lot of people really suck behind the wheel!

Looks like cars aren't that great after all huh?
-
this is very cool!
i wonder if we will see more of this in the future, and if so will they get citations or praise?
imo they should allow bikes during rush hour when speeds are less than 30mph.
-
wheres the pod for this thing?
