Women around the world are gaining greater rights and freedoms, but there’s still a long way to go. This special looks at the challenges that groups of women still face. In Cameroon, mothers are ironing their daughters’ breasts in an effort to make them seem less attractive to men so they do no become sexually active at an early age. We look at why Iran is considered the rhinoplasty capital of the world. In China, the economic boom has produced wide disparities in the economic conditions of its people and huge differences in the status of Chinese women, from middle class urban dwellers who, thanks to China’s One Child Policy, enjoy some of the highest levels of equality in the world, to tens of millions of rural women who have among the lowest status.

  • I didn't see nothing wrong her nose. Her getting the nose job made as much sense as women getting their breast ironed.

  • What the hell ! I understand that they are afraid for their girls but there has to be a better solution. Thank God I live in America.

  • We have no point of reference, besides maybe that awkward transition from child to adult, for the situation of not wanting our bodies to look attractive. Here in America we typically mutilate ourselves to be more attractive with surgery, piercings and tattoos. In Cameroon, they mutilate themselves for protection. As a result, I don't think we'll ever really understand the situations another nation faces.

  • i understand that this is tradition there, but i am always curious as to when, throughout the course of tradition, do people begin to recognize that they have the right to question their society and the social expectations associated with a tradition upbringing? how much time has it taken to make these women realize that they are serious hurting there own, as well as other women's ability to rise above and demand to have their bodies back? will women ever truly have the same innate rights that men seem to posses? i really hope that another phase of feminist movement is seen within my lifetime.

  • It is amazing to me how women are punished for the weak nature of men. What's more disturbing, the woman have not come up with a better way to solve the problem of the violation of young girls other than breast ironing. It is a perfect example of blaming the victom! It was not that long ago in american history when women were not consider equal to white males.

This practice is liken to female castration in other african countries. African woman should revamp their thinking. Maybe they should begin male ironing (think of it). When they see the boys exibiting the behavior of the rapist, acting disrespectful of the development of young girls into women, the women of the village should commense to male ironing. The problem of unwanted advances would be solved in less than a decade (think of it).

I don't understand what the men are thinking in the various african countries. African woman have been the backbone of the civilization. If the woman are destroyed how will the men recreate? Have the african men picked up the habits of their once european oppressors? And, how much does the demoralization of Sara Bartman in the 19th century affect the thought processes when it comes to African / Black woman in Africa and around the world?

The doctor spoke of girls getting sex education. Why is there no mention of the young boys and men learning about sex matters through sex education classes. If one group knows and the other group doesn't, the problem is not solved. Both boys and girls should be taught about sex, and the responsibilities that go along with sex.

The women must standup and demand respect as true human beings. This is the only way anything will change. There maybe violence. The woman's sufferage movement in America was violent. The civil rights movement was violent. Both were violent not because of those who wanted their rights, but the movements were violent due to those who did not want to give up their power over both groups.

  • Hard to believe this is meant as protection for these young woman or children. Just shows how different the Third World is from developed countries. Very Sad.
