Clinton may need Obama's donors to pay her $20M debt

Should she lose or abandon her quest for the Democratic presidential nomination, Hillary Rodham Clinton will have to deal with her campaign's more than $20 million debt — a step that could test her relationship with Barack Obama and raise new issues in campaign finance law.
Clinton owed $10 million at the end of March, has made loans to her campaign totaling of $11.4 million thus far and will more than likely end the primary season significantly in the red.Among her options is transferring that debt to her Senate campaign committee and paying it off with contributions to her 2012 re-election effort.Clinton campaign officials say they have not contemplated what she will do with the debt. Asked whether she would welcome financial help from Obama, her spokesman, Howard Wolfson, told Fox News Sunday that "any talk of that is premature."Obama's chief strategist, David Axelrod, offered a similar response.
"She hasn't asked, and we haven't offered. And I think that discussion is way premature," he said on the same program.Under a 2002 campaign finance law that Republican presidential candidate John McCain helped write, Clinton would have only until the Democratic convention in late August to raise money to cover her loan. After the convention, she could only raise up to $250,000 toward paying it off

  • Sucks to be a big spender from the East with a nasty attitude. Let her take it out of her other campaign fund. She spent it it's hers.
  • Haven't the Clintons stollen enough money over the years? can't she pull from that stash?

  • As the presumed nominee when this whole thing began, this is just more evidence of how poorly Hillary's campaign has been run. I agree with MM--she spent the money. Let her foot the bill.

  • But I'd be willing to kick in twenty-five if she would shut up and behave.
  • now now she had to do what she had to do to win AT ALL COSTS.

  • Well, she started out with around 100 million personal wealth. She tried to buy the presidency, looks like she better dig into her stash and pay the bill.
  • She's run a good race...anyone who is leaning to the Dem ticket should kick in a little...even if she isn't the eventual nominee...

  • Look - she's EXACTLY like Busheney - over-extending.

I think we need something different!

And let's not forget mccain's stupidly blind obedience of the Busheney gang. We are only in a stupid war because mccain and most Ripusoffican's are followers, not leaders, they are men/children looking for daddy. Just look at the completely irrational arguments they make. Their refusal to consider ALL the facts and complete denial of the lies and deceptions the Ripusofficans and their supporters have utilized to "market" this war and other transgressions against our Constitution and our country.

Funny, that makes me think of that Elizabeth on "The View". I just described her - didn't I?

  • It is interesting that part of Hillary's early air of invincibility was her fundraising ability and her sizeable warchest.

I am sure there are at least 20 million of us that wouild send her a buck tomorrow if she would promise to go away.

  • In the long run it will be worth it just to get this primary over so Obama can focus on McCain.

  • Leave her owing or she will run as an independent.
  • The Clinton's made over a 100 mill, last year. I don't think they'll need the Elitists to pay her bills.

  • Oh HELL EMPHATICALLY NO!!! Obama, tell her this ain't no date, and let her go dutch to pick up that hefty tab she's done fecklessly run up. According to her heavily redacted tax statement, there are still a few more loans-to-self left in the Clinton personal account.
