Since so many victims of the earthquake were children, parents are now grieving for the loss of their child - their only child - since China initiated its population control measure in 1979.
This has made a tragic situation all the more sad.
According to a Chinese government, this policy has prevented the birth of 400 million more babies.

What about the billions of baby girls that where dumped on the side of the road by those same parents? Yeah, grieve over your only begotten son. Carry on the family name.

keeesha - while you have a good point about the 'male choice', a loss is still a loss, you know? human rights is an important factor that most everyone is bringing up near the Olympics, but no parent should ever have to bury their child.

Not sure if its known but now, Shanghainese families prefer to have daughters over sons, it may have been this way in the "old days", I know my parents joke about it from time to time...I think they are at least, but nowadays with the growing pace of Shanghai, and the inner culture of Shanghainese and traditions, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a larger % of orphan boys then girls, or to the extreme as the poster mentioned, dumping the babies on the side of the road. My mother told me about this, and it happened a few years ago, around the time I was born if not earlier, I'm glad that I had some sparkle in my eyes when I popped out, else I would of been eating concrete screamin for my mom's nipple :O. Also I just saw on Headline News here in Boston before this post, they did a small cap on the earthquake @ Chengdu, live footage and a few pictures, but nothing to "view discretion advised". But agreed, a human life lost is still the same, theres no 2nd class Human beings, not anymore at least.

Death is still death, no matter what country, under what regime, in accordance with whatever policies, born into whichever family, with however many brothers or sisters,... Death is still death. Suffering is still suffering.

Good points - and yes, there has been a recent push from the gov't to not...well, shall we say 'choose' the gender of the child, as there are 37 million more males than females:

There is still a massive black market for (quick guess the number of things here on the black market)...
Ultrasound Operators.
whatis - I completely agree.-
