Francis Bacon's "Triptych, 1976" set a record for contemporary art auctions. An anonymous bidder purchased the three panels for $86,281,000 (£43m) at Sotheby's.
This large, complex work was inspired by Greek mythology and opened a new stylistic era for Bacon. It was first exhibited in 1976 in Paris.

Aren't these collectors just treating these works of art as highly decorative credit-tokens?
In a world where scarcity can directly equate to high financial value, I guess an original work of art is the ultimate prize. Nothing is more certain to significantly appreciate in value.
It's sad that the art world has been hijacked by the super-rich; but I suppose at least the works of art themselves will be looked after.
