Fantastic short video shows just how distorted American news coverage is. What a tragedy!

You mean to say, that the rest of the world has bigger problems than worrying about the deaths of B-list celebrities?

Faux News Just-In™: Britney picks her nose in public.
This talk reminds me of that incident where Mika Brzezinski of MSNBC refused to read out some non-news about Paris Hilton; we need more people like her. -
We know less about the rest of the world because, American as a nation is self absorbed with ourselves. We believe that we are better than people from other nations. Other people don't matter. That's why the rest of the world is so angry with us.(duh) !

It's amazing what a little research and data can show.

The "news" coverage by mainstream media is ass-backwards. Rather than aiming to inform, mainstream media's goal is to distract the masses from what really matters. The media keeps the sheep in line while the government fleeces them.

i am thankful for the day i discovered current. up until that day, the only international news i heard about involved which country brangelina was adopting their new kid from. now, i actually know what's going on outside this country.

This is exactly why I visit websites like Current and only turn on CNN in the morning as I get dressed for school or just before going to sleep.
I really don't understand why A.N. Smith was covered so much. The same with the disappearance of Natalee Holloway in Aruba. After a 10-15 minute clip/montage, who cares?
News networks exist to inform us, not to tell us the same thing over and over again. -
Nicely done!

A couple of months ago, I was telling all of my friends how informed I was. I had been watching CNN non-stop. I'd have it on in the morning, and I'd have it on as I did my homework at night.
Then, one day, one of my friends seemed to disagree with how well informed I was. I don't think I really started to agree with him until Anna Nicole Smith died. For a solid week, CNN seemed to devoted every moment to her death and where her new born was and who the father was.
It seems the only time we pay attention to the rest of the world is when tragedies occur, like the recent cyclone and earthquake in Asia. Other than that, the rest of the world just fades away.
We are gravely ill-informed.-

The NY Times has a pretty good international section, and its even ahead of the national section. Same goes for National Geographic.
Stop watching it and they will stop showing it.
Ignorance is a choice.-

Excellent reporting, well presented.
That's why I supplement my news with 'The Economist'; while the context is economic, it is global and global markets react to social issues as well.
(Yes, NY Times does one of the better jobs on international coverage.)-

re: BillionJawingNeurons
Ignorance is a choice ... that's true. However, the fact that two publications pay more attention to the greater world (outside of US) does not change the fact, that the mainstream TV news stations like CNN and Fox talk about pointless things for HOURS! -
The reasoning behind Fox's choice of broadcast is self-evident, (feeding fear and distractions to their viewer base) and is a separate issue all together.
As for CNN and the other major publications, I am more than certain that the Anna Nicole Smith saga would have lasted 1/5th of the time it did if were not for the significant viewing audience it received. These publications pander to what brings in the viewers. Until we as a viewing population decide that what pertains to us is what goes on outside our borders, then the publications will have no reason to change.
Just turn it off.-

I wonder how other countries are fairing in comparison with the U.S. on international news coverage.
But besides that, the news on local tv is completely bogus. Its nothing different than Rob and Big on MTV, they're just shooting for the highest ratings possible.
I'm so sick of hearing the "You///your children could be in danger from xxxxxx. More at 11" template. Pretty lame strategy to compel people to tune in.
Anyone remember that news anchor that refused to do a report about Paris Hilton while on live tv, disgusted by the fact that she was the best thing given to her? We need more people like that. -
Wonderful presentation.
Wonderful.
Now, why is there an ad of BMW there? And why is the ad looking like the car is made out of water, when really, it still uses the same goddamn oil as a truck?
Talk about distortion of truth. -
Watched this video. I wasn't shocked. Firstly, we are already overloaded with junk online. Secondly, the amount of information online are plenty. A great deal of people that I talked to don't know how to extract the information online. Its long, tedious and also the fact is that a lot of the sites or TV are not in English language. They are in languages like: Chinese, Arabic or others. Thats my two cents.

This is the saddest shit ever. Sadder than a video of a skinhead stomping a basket full of day-old puppies and kittens.

Finally, a sober statistical indictment or our traditional media's criminal ineptitude and neglect. What passes for 'news' on all the other cable networks is nothing more than high school gossip transposed to the nation's capitol. It makes me extremely thankful for the emergence of more people powered media like Current.
-
It would be interesting to see a similar map applied to Current News. I believe the results would be much less US-centric than on any other news network.
