Airport scanners to hit London's streets?

Following the surge in violent knife crime in the London area, the Metropolitan police are to introduce a new program aimed at combating this escalating violence, installing handheld and mobile airport-style scanners that will detect any concealed weapons.

"The new program, called Blunt 2, started this week in one borough and should be in place in all 32 London boroughs within the next few months, said a Metropolitan Police spokesman, who asked not to be identified in line with police rules."

Do you think having so many of these airport scanners in and around London will actually do anything to help curb the street violence?

  • What's your thoughts on the mobile scanners?

  • It's a good idea as long as it doesn't cause too much inconvenience with false positives.

They should be installed in underground station entry and exit points; carrying weapons would stop people from being able to travel easily.

  • What, you mean like sniffer dogs?

Although I'm not hugely into this idea it would seem that the knive problem in London is getting worse so something needs to be done.

I think this is a preferable option than police just doing random stop & search's.

  • "Itemiser FX can provide highly effective trace particle detection of difficult-to-find substances while letting people pass through the screening process quickly and easily with little or no assistance. It can be operated as a standalone system or, using its networking capability, as the detection "front-end" for integrated security systems. In a networked setting, multiple Itemiser FXs can be monitored remotely by a single operator."

,,,,,The GE Itemiser tests for over 30 different substances. They put a fresh filter in a wand and pass it over your body and wallet. Certain things CAN give false positives, such as perfumes and lotions.

What a helpless feeling considering that you have no control over what substances prior users may have had in a hire car, hotel room, or even, who handled the notes in your wallet before they became your money.
