A lot of people lay the blame on a lack of big stars or a lack of gonzo stats, but the pure and simple fact is that America is already oversaturated with sports. I wouldn't claim to know the situation anywhere else in the world, but here, there's 3-5 major sports already (Baseball, Football, Basketball, Hockey being on the outskirts, and NASCAR being kind of questionable as a 'sport'). On top of that, American players suck. Nobody's watching soccer right now and watching bad soccer isn't going to get ball rolling. The sport won't catch on until all of Baseball & Football gets locked up in steroid/videotaping scandals, Basketball miraculously falls off the face of the Earth, Hockey has another lockout, and/or people realize that watching cars drive in a circle for a couple hours ain't all the amusing.

America actually needs an interest in soccer for soccer to be relevant in America. We get football from the popular NFL! Importing the first David Beckham was a colossal waste of enough someone's money. Importing another one should get some publicist time in jail for the wasteful, fraudulent, abusive misallocation of somebody else's funds.
