WASHINGTON - Did the House of Representatives vote to end funding for the Iraq war?

It certainly looked that way — but let's delve deeper into what really happened Thursday between the Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill.

    Dear Marilynn,

I wanted to share some breaking news. The House of Representatives just voted 149 to 141 to cut off funding for the war in Iraq.

This was followed by votes to put significant restrictions on President Bush's war policy, including a timeline for withdrawal, and creating a new GI Bill to help returning veterans.1

Make no mistake, your efforts were a key factor in this decision. In the past two weeks, you placed over 2,300 calls to House members in targeted districts, demanding they bring a responsible end to the war and then calling for the exact vote result that happened today.

This is the strongest vote by the House since the war began in opposition to the President's war.

But, this is just the first step.

Contribute $35 right now to increase the pressure to bring the troops home:

After today, the fight goes to the Senate. I'll keep you posted.

  • It is about time...

  • Okay? They can't spend what we don't give them. Let's remind Dumya that he is a lame duck about to leave Office with a legacy of having been the worst President in the history of any government on earth at any time.
  • this article points to the oddities of the bill and what it means to be on capital hill. scary and weird stuff. nothing is ever cut and dry, its easy to see why things get bogged down messy.
i hope this ends up meaning something to the GI bill. if we really want to 'support our troops' they need care when they get back.

  • Nothing yet, I keep expecting a bomb. What's not to like? I think I'm downright lovable some days.
  • Well it's nice to see the majority move forward,

  • Yes, isn't it the last couple of days have been a bright spot. Tonight Two of our gas stations were out of gas? Is that happening anywhere else? I read in the paper that the military is sending ships with refined fuel to the middle east, could they be gearing up for their attack on Iran?
  • It's good to see that the silent majority finally woke up and realized they may have a spine after all...

If Cheney wispers in his ear and W uses the red phone to make the call against Iran, the rest of the world will not be the least bit amused. Can't anyone control the maniacs on the Hill..?

  • It's impossible but wouldn't it be great if they had to just pack up and come home? This is at least a start of the giant sleeping bear waking up. I bet he is hungry and cranky.
  • The best and worst of legislation has weird shit attached, usually buried toward the end and rarely having much, if anything, in common with the body of the bill. It's the fine print that gets ya in the end, they say.
It was a slim, yet significant, step in the best direction possible.
    And, Marilynn? *bows*

  • I've been so angry that they pass the funding time after time without any fight at all. This makes me so proud. The passage of funding in no way supports our troops. That they are starting to address benefits for them when they come home is so important and better get done or it never will be. I know that it will eventually have to pass in some form, I hope it will be loaded up with education, health, and housing benefits each time it is debated and when it finally passes. Make Bush and company have to come out publicly and try to fight those benefits show them for what they are Fascist Pigs.
  • Even if the judicial branch of our federal government had till eternity to make this administration accountable for all of the misdeeds against this nation and its people, they wouldn't have enough time to get it done...Oh wait, they are the ones who put them in power..!

  • Exactly why the SCOTUS needs impeached too. It's time to clean the slate and start over. Roberts, Thomas for sure need out of there, maybe more.
