China's school developers face death penalty for earthquake destruction

The developers of the newly built schools that collapsed face the death penalty if they are found responsible for poorly constructed buildings. Apparently 7,000 of the 200,000+ buildings that were destroyed were schools, many recently built, costing lives of so many children. And with the one-child policy, this is adding extra heartache. Do you think developers should face death penalty though?

  • Wow. That would be harsh.

Does China even have Earthquake building guidelines? Are Earthquakes common there?

  • It seems fairly backwards to me, the idea of compensating death with death just doesn't weigh up well on my justice meter.

If they were criminally incompetent in their building of the schools then they must be punished, but the death penalty is way too extreme.

  • If you're going to have a death penalty, then I think this could be an appropriate use of it, just like for the Chinese companies that caused deaths through tainted consumer products.

Death penalty or not, I wish more corporate officers and directors in America faced personal criminal charges for their companies' criminal wrongdoings. Corporations are only supposed to exist when there are human beings that can be held responsible for their corporations' unethical behavior.

That essential connection seems to evaporate for the largest corporations, leading occasionally to corporate behavior that, if exhibited by humans, could not be called anything other than depraved.

  • I'd say in this case the death penalty as a deterrent might be effective. If the States can kill a man for killing one or two other people, then surely a government official in charge of millions of children's lives can be punished for being derelict of duty. Politicians don't face severe enough penalties in the West for abandoning or abusing their post.
