In the 1940s Kenneth and Mamie Clark designed the doll test to examine how black children were impacted by segregation. Most of the children were able to identify racial difference. The children also readily assigned positive attributes to the white doll and negative attributes to the black doll.

The year is now 2008, and it has been fifty-four years since the Brown V. Board of Education. One would assume that within such a large time span that much would have changed. Unfortunately, this is not the case. When tested today black children still chose the white doll over the black doll. It is clear that we have not escaped the legacy of slavery. Systemic racism continues to stunt the growth, and self-esteem of our children.

  • Instead of telling your child that because they are this and that, they will have it harder, we should encourage them to succeed despite color, gender or sexual orientation. I hear my family always doing that pity talk about we have it harder or you better watch out because you are black. We are feeding our children fear and failure, not happiness and opportunity.

  • RealCanadian, the fact that you use the term reverse racism implies that you believe that racism is something that should be directed solely at blacks. Your commentary only reveals the level of your prejudice. Here is a quarter go and by a conscience and a sense of human morality.

  • Sorry ginerbeer25 that you misunderstood me. We all know that only White people can be 'racist', therefor any racism toward them must be 'reverse racism'. Is that not possible?
